PREFACE.

These notes of my Lectures on "The Song of Songs" I dedicate with grateful love and many prayers to the Congregation worshipping with me at Belgrave Chapel.

They contain all the Lord has been pleased to teach myself as to the meaning of this most spiritual and heavenly record as well as all I could gather from other sources which appeared worthy of repetition.

I can truly say I never expect to enjoy on earth sweeter hours than I have spent in the study of this Song of Loves.

SONG OF SOLOMON.

"The song of songs, which is Solomon's." -SONG i. 1.

WE

E are taught in 1 Kings iv. 32 that Solomon wrote one thousand and five songs (see the wondrous description given there of this great man, 29-34, and how far more important a little grace is than much wisdom, and how the wisest man can fall to the greatest depths. "He was wiser than all men").

But only one of the songs has been preserved to us. It may be rendered "the song concerning Solomon" as well as "the song of Solomon." He wrote it as concerning not himself only, but also in reference to him of whom he was a type, the true Prince of Peace, the King of Israel, a greater than Solomon is here."

Notice in how many points of view Solomon was a type of Christ.

In his names, "Jedidiah," the beloved of the Lord, also "the peaceful one."

In his wisdom. "The Queen of Sheba came to hear the wisdom of Solomon."
