I cannot serve Him as I ought,
No works have I to boast;
Yet would I glory in the thought,
That I should owe Him most.

243

PLUNG'D in a gulf of dark despair,
We wretched sinners lay,

Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimm'ring day.

With pitying eyes the Prince of grace
Beheld our helpless grief;

He saw, and O amazing love!
He came to our relief.

Down from the shining seats above,
With joyful haste He sped;
Enter'd the grave in mortal flesh,
A ransom for the dead.

O for this love let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break,
And all harmonious human tongues
The Saviour's praises speak.

Angels, assist our mighty joys,

Strike all your harps of gold;

But when you raise your highest notes,
His love can ne'er be told.

COME, let us join our cheerful songs
With angels round the throne;

Ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
But all their joys are one.

"Worthy the Lamb that died," they cry,
"To be exalted thus;"
"Worthy the Lamb," our lips reply,
"For He was slain for us.

Jesus is worthy to receive
Honour and power divine;
And blessings more than we can give,
Be, Lord, for ever thine.

Let all creation join in one,

To bless the sacred Name
Of Him who sits upon the throne,
And to adore the Lamb.

CHILDREN of the heavenly King,
As ye journey sweetly sing;
Sing your great Redeemer's praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.

Ye are travlling home to God,
In the way your fathers trod;
They are happy now, and ye
Soon their happiness shall see.

Sing, ye ransom'd flock, and blest,
You on Jesus' throne shall rest;
There your seat is now prepar'd,
There your kingdom and reward.

Lord, obedient we will go,
Gladly leaving all below;
Only Thou our leader be,
And we still will follow Thee.

LET us with a gladsome mind
Praise the Lord, for He is kind;
For his mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

He, with all-commanding might,
Fill'd the new-made world with light;
For his mercies shall endure,

Ever faithful, ever sure.

All things living He doth feed,
His full hand supplies their need;
For his mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

He hath, with a piteous eye,
Look'd upon our misery;
For his mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

Let us therefore warble forth
His high majesty and worth;
For his mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

ALLELUIA! song of gladness,
Voice of everlasting joy;
Alleluia! sound the sweetest
Heard among the choirs on high,
Hymning in God's blissful mansions,
Day and night unceasingly.

Alleluia! Church victorious,

Thou may'st lift the joyful strain ;
Alleluia! songs of triumph

Well befit the ransom'd train:
Faint and feeble are our praises,
While in exile we remain.

Alleluia! songs of gladness

Suit not always souls forlorn;
Alleluia! sounds of sadness

Midst our joyous strains are borne:
For in this dark world of sorrow

We with tears our sins must mourn.

Praises with our prayers uniting,
Hear us, blessed Trinity!
Bring us to thy blissful presence,
There the Paschal Lamb to see;
There to Thee our Alleluia
Singing everlastingly!

SONGS of praise the angels sang,
Heaven with Alleluias rang,
When Jehovah's work begun,
When He spake, and it was done.

Songs of praise awoke the morn,
When the Prince of Peace was born;
Songs of praise arose when He
Captive led captivity.

Saints below; with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here, by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.

Borne upon their latest breath,
Songs of praise shall conquer death;
Then, amidst eternal joy,

Songs of praise their powers employ.

HARK! ten thousand voices sounding,
Far and wide throughout the sky;
"Tis the voice of joy abounding,
Jesus lives, no more to die :
Come, ye saints, your tribute bring,
Crown Him everlasting King!

Jesus lives, his conflict over,

Lives to claim his great reward;
Angels round the Victor hover,
Crowding to behold their Lord :
Come, ye saints, your tribute bring,
Crown Him everlasting King!

Day and night they cry before Him,
Holy, holy, holy Lord!"

66

All the powers of heaven adore Him,
And obey his sov'reign word:
Come, ye saints, your tribute bring,
Crown Him everlasting King!
