SAINTE CATHERINE.

On pense que sainte Catherine naquit à Alexandrie, dans le Ive siècle; mais on ne connaît rien de certain sur sa vie ni sur son martyre. Cependant on croit qu'elle était d'une famille noble et riche; on croit aussi qu'elle fut savante, et que sa beauté avait attiré les regards de César Maximin Daïa; mais elle résista aux propositions qu'il lui fit, et peut être ces refus devinrent-ils la cause de sa mort ou au moins de son exil.

Demeurée inconnue pendant quatre cents ans, un corps trouvé sur le mont Sinai fut regardé comme celui d'une sainte martyre, et un culte lui fut rendu chez les Grecs, sous le nom d'Aicatherina. Les actes de sa vie furent alors recherchés, et on y mêla quelques faits dont il est permis de douter. La roue, qui est l'un de ses attributs caractéristiques, est de ce nombre: on ne peut assurer que Dieu ait fait un miracle pour briser les instrumens de son supplice, puisqu'on n'est pas même certain qu'elle ait été martyrisée.

ST. CATHARINE.

It is supposed that St. Catharine was born at Alexandria, during the 4th century, but nothing certain is known respecting either her life or her martyrdom. However it is believed that she belonged to a noble and wealthy family, also that she was learned, and that her beauty attracted the attention of Cæsar Maximin Daïa; but she resisted his proposals, and this refusal was probably the cause of her death, or at least of her exile.

After remaining undiscovered during four hundred years, a body found upon mount Sinai was regarded as that of a holy martyr, and it became an object of worship among the Greeks under the name of Aicatherina. It was then that inquiries were made after the acts of her life, and among them some facts were blended, the truth of which may be doubtful. The wheel, one of her characteristic attributes, is in this case it cannot be asserted that God performed a miracle in destroying the instrument of her sacrifice, when it is not certain that she suffered martyrdom.
