Ce tableau représente la Vierge et l'enfant Jésus, accompagnes de plusieurs personnages ; le nom de l'un d'eux a prévalu, et il n'est connu que sous le nom de saint Jérôme du Corrége. Il a été peint en 1524 par ordre de Briseïs Cossa, veuve d'Oclave Bergonzi, gentilhomme parmesan. Le peintre l'ayant terminé en six mois, il reçut, indépendamment du prix convenu, deux voitures de bois, un porc gras et quelques mesures de froment : ce n'est pas ainsi que sont maintenant payés ni récompensés les artistes de nos jours, dont les travaux cependant n'auront pas, dans atteint la réputation dont jouit maintenant ce trois cents ans, lui-ci. Le tableau fut donné au couvent de Saint-Antoine de Parme, où il resta jusqu'en 1749; à cette époque le roi de Portugal en ayant fait offrir 40 mille sequins (plus de 400 mille francs), et l'abbé de Saint-Antoine étant disposé à céder ce chef-d'œuvre, l'infant don Philippe le fit enlever de l'abbaye et déposer à la cathédrale, où il resta jusqu'en 1756; alors il fut placé à l'Académie de peinture que ce prince venait de fonder. Lors des victoires d'Italie, en 1798, le duc de Parme fit offrir un million au général en chef s'il voulait consentir à lui laisser ce chef-d'œuvre ; mais, malgré les besoins de la caisse militaire, Bonaparte se rendit aux instances de Monge et de Berthollet, et ordonna que le tableau fût transporté à Paris, ou il est resté jusqu'en 1815. On connaît à Parme plus de dix copies de ce tableau. Les meilleures gravures sont celles d'Augustin Carrache et de Robert Strange. Bartholozzi l'avait commencé pour le Musée français; il est mort avant d'avoir terminé sa planche. Haut., 6 pieds 4 pouces ; larg., 4 pieds 4 pouces. DOE THE VIRGIN AND INFANT JESUS, WITH SAINT JEROME AND MARY MAGDALENE. This picture represents the Virgin and infant Jesus attended by several persons; the name of one of them has prevailed, and this composition is known by the name of Corregio's saint Jerome. It was painted in 1524 for Briseïs Cossa, widow of Octavius Bergonzi, a gentleman of Parma. The artist having executed it in the space of six months, received, in addition to the price agreed on, two loads of wood, a fut hog, and some measures of wheat it is not thus that we pay and reward the artists of our day, whose works will not three hundred years hence have acquired the same reputation as this composition still bears. : The picture was given to the convent of Saint-Anthony at Parma, where it remained till 1749; at that time the king of Portugal having offered for it 40 thousand zechins (about 16 thousand guineas), and the abbot of Saint-Anthony being disposed to part with this chef-d'œuvre, the infant don Philip had it taken out of the abbey, and placed in the cathedral, where it remained till 1756, when it was removed to the Academy of painting which that prince had just founded. At the time of the victories in Italy, in 1798, the duke of Parma offered a million to the commander in chief to leave him in possession of this chef-d'œuvre ; but, notwithstanding the wants of the military chest, Bonaparte yielded to the solicitations of Monge and Berthollet, and ordered the picture to be conveyed to Paris, where it remained till 1815. There are at Parma more than ten copies of this work. The best engravings are by Augustine Carracci and Robert Strange. Bartholozzi undertook one for the French Museum, but he died before he had finished it. Height, 6 feet 11 inches; breadth, 4 feet 9 inches. |
