Le sujet de ce tableau se trouve dans saint Luc ou il est dit. « Le temps prescrit par la loi de Moïse pour la purification de Marie étant venu, ils portèrent l'enfant à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur , selon qu'il est écrit dans la loi : tout mâle premier né sera consacré au Seigneur; et pour offrir en sacrifice, ainsi qu'il est porté dans la loi de Dieu, deux tourterelles, ou deux petites colombes. avait á Jérusalem un homme juste et craignant Dieu , nommé Siméon, qui attendait la consolation d'Israël, et le Saint-Esprit était en lui. Et le Saint-Esprit lui avait révélé qu'il ne mourrait pas qu'il n'eût vu le Christ du Seigneur. Il vint donc au temple par inspiration, comme le père et la mère de l'enfant Jésus l'y portaient, pour accomplir à son égard ce qui était prescrit par la loi. Il le prit entre ses bras et bénit Dieu en disant : Maintenant, Seigneur, vous laisserez votre serviteur mourir en paix, puisque mes yeux ont vu le Sauveur....... Il y avait aussi une prophetesse nommée Anne. Elle survint en bénissant le Seigneur et parlait de cet enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la rédemption d'Israel. »

Le style de ce tableau est poble sans affectation, et le dessein correct sans sécheresse. La figure de la Vierge est remplie de naïveté et de modestie. La jeune fille qui présente les colombes est d'une expression charmante. Le coloris vrai, vigoureux et suave, donne un grand prix à cet excellent ouvrage, qui fait partie de la galerie du Belvedere å Vienne; il s'en trouve une répétition un peu plus petite au Musée de Paris. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the Lord, every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord ); And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon ; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel ; and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple : and when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word : For mine eyes have seen thy salvation... and there was one Anna a prophetess... The style of this picture is noble without affectation, and the design, correct without dryness. There is a native simplicity and modesty in the figure of the Virgin; and the expression of the young girl who is presenting the doves, is particularly pleasing. The truth, vigour and sweetness of the colouring give a high value to this excellent performance, which forms a part of the Belvedere gallery at , Vienna: a duplicate , of somewhat smaller size, is found in the Paris Museum. It has been engraved by Couet. Height, 10 feet 7 inches; width, 6 feet 11 inches.
