The Students' Representative Council was instituted in January 1885. Its aims are (1) To represent the Students in such matters as affect their interests; (2) To afford a means of communication between the Students and the University authorities, as well as the general public; (3) To promote academic unity among the Students. The Council is elected annually in November, partly by a general poll, partly by the Students of the various years, and partly by the Students' Unions. The Council is now a joint one of St Andrews and Dundee. Each has its own Committee to manage its own affairs, and the Joint-Committees form the Council. The office-bearers consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and two Treasurers. All communications to the Students, or to the Council, should be addressed to the Secretary of the Council, Students' Union, St Andrews. MEN STUDENTS' UNION, ST ANDREWS. The Scheme for instituting a Students' Union in the University of St Andrews was initiated by the Students' Representative Council. In January 1892 the present premises at Butt's Wynd were entered. The general management of the Union is vested in the Governing Board, subject to the condition that the Trustees shall be consulted in all money matters. The Trustees are the Lord Lieutenant of the County of Fife, the Sheriff of the County of Fife, and the Principal of the University. The Governing Board is elected by the Senatus Academicus, University Court, and Students' Representative Council. The Principal of the University presides at the meetings of the Board. WOMEN STUDENTS' UNION, ST ANDREWS. Through the kindness of Mrs Carnegie (wife of Mr Andrew Carnegie, Rector of the University, 1901-1907), a permanent Union for Women Students was instituted at 79 North Street, St Andrews. The general management of the Union is vested in the Governing Board, of which the Very Rev. Principal Galloway is Chairman. The entire internal management is in the hands of a House Committee of seven students elected annually, three ladies appointed by the University Court, and the Warden of University Hall. |
