This Translation, which may seem obscure, is adopted to avoid expressing he, she, or it, each of which has many advocates, while none of them is in the original. The Love that is not to be disturbed is the mutual love of the Bridegroom and the Bride, the love of Christ to the Church, and of the Church to Christ in the Holy Spirit. VAGUE NOR CONJECTURAL. THE canonicity of the Song of Solomon is now acknowledged, so far as we know, by all who receive the other Scriptures; and its allegorical form cannot long be questioned by thoughtful men who own its inspiration. Notwithstanding, it must always present but little to attract those whose entire religion consists in argument. There are some, however, to whom "the end of the commandment is Love," whose minds are so averse to allegory that they can scarcely profit by an allegorical composition. These are probably few, but there is a large number of intelligent Christians, who regard this divine allegory as so full of uncertainty in its interpretation, that they can employ it with little spiritual comfort, because with no assurance of the mind of the Spirit in using it. Now this supposed uncertainty of meaning in the language of the Song of Solomon is a complete mistake.
