The far future, with the promise of its possible hope, had come to Herbert Rydon. After three years of patient waiting he won the promise he had so long desired to have. Rose Gurney could not doubt the nature of the affection offered her. It was no boyish impulse which kept Herbert so true to his first avowal; she had no need to fear for him that he would some day awake to find he had been led into a cruel mistake--that he had accepted as sound, deep feeling, a mere passing fancy. And for herself, Rose knew that the affection she bore Herbert Rydon was one which time but deepened and intensified. And thus, when Herbert paid his usual Christmas visit to his aunt, three winters after he had pleaded for the promise of hope for some future time, Rose, with the full consent of her parents, became engaged to him. And the days which followed were very full of happiness. Nelly and Adelaide were delighted with the prospect of having Herbert Rydon for their brother-in-law. They had long since been led to take more serious views of life than those which had made them desire to give the greater part of their leisure, day by day, to novel-reading, or to amusements which had no other object than that of selfgratification and pleasure. The reality of Rose's happiness, from the time of her first visit to Meta Jocelyn, became every day more established as a fact in the minds of her sisters, and they needed no greater argument to convince them that her life possessed a charm to which they were themselves strangers.
