EDITOR'S PREFACE.

THERE has not, I believe, been a reprint of modern date of any portion of the writings of Bishop Sanderson; but there are, perhaps, few names more respectable than his, in the catalogue of British Theologians. Living in the most stirring times of our literature; conspicuous amongst the "lettered hierarchy" of his age for erudition and talent; and connected historically with the Church of England as one of the framers of her Liturgy,—this eminent prelate has yet, in the records of his private life, left behind him the best claim to our admiration. We there find that he was strong in the “spirit” as well as in the "letter" of the New Testament, -that he had not only "fought a good fight," but had made a "good profession

before many witnesses;" "holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience."

Myselfa descendant of Bishop Sanderson, if with undue partiality I assign him too high a place amongst his contemporaries, I will yet indulge the hope, that there are some to whom the present little volume may be acceptable, and who, should it prompt them to look through his folios for themselves, will, in the perusal of his clear detail and straight-forward statement, be ready to join Charles the First in that noble eulogy of his faithful chaplain,-“ I carry my ears to hear other preachers, but I carry my conscience to hear Dr. Sanderson."

Bedford, Sept. 22, 1833.

CHRISTIAN ETHICS:

BEING

SELECTIONS FROM THE WRITINGS OF BISHOP SANDERSON.

INDUSTRY.

"He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich."

"He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding."

"The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute."

"The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat."

:

"In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.”

"The way of the slothful man is as a hedge

of thorns but the way of the righteous is made plain."

"He that is slothful in his work, is brother to him that is a great waster."

"Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep: and an idle soul shall suffer hunger."

"The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing."

"Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread."

"The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness: but of every one that is hasty, only to want."

"He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich."

"The desire of the slothful killeth him: for his hands refuse to labour. He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth, and spareth not."
