THE GATHERING OF THE LILIES.

MAGNIFICENTLY ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR,

L. CLARKSON,

In exquisite Water Colors, Lithocoustic Etchings, and Tinted Crayon Sketches.

This lovely GIFT BOOK is made up of the following charming Original Poems:

“THE GATHERING OF the lilieS,”

TO THE EASTER LILY,"

"FAST LITTLE MISS CROCUS,"
"BURIED LILIES,"

"THE LAST LILY," and

"CROWNED."

The first poem, from which the collection is named, is illustrated with eight real gems in black and white crayon sketches, on gray background. In this poem the "JAPAN," the "GARDEN," the "MEADOW," the "TIGER," the "WATER," and the "DAY" Lily, together with the sweet little "LILY OF THE VALLEY," each make a characteristic plea for notice and favor; along comes " QUEEN CALLA," and her sway is at once acknowledged, as they

"Clamor each to deck her brow
With honor sought.'

After impressing silence, she informs them that she has come to share her crown with

"The Valley-Lily, who is fair
As she is sweet.'

The second poem, entitled "TO THE EASTER LILY," is beautiful in tone and sentiment, and is illustrated by a magnificent full-sized “Calla Lily," in water colors, upon an atmospheric background.

Following this comes "FAST LITTLE MISS CROCUS," which is somewhat like the favorite "Mushroom Innocence."

The most charming picture, as well as the most strikingly descriptive of the poem it illustrates, " BURIED LILIES," is a dreary snow scene, framed with all the wild flowers of spring.

As a fitting companion, both in verse and artistic ability, follows a poem entitled "CROWNED." The fullpage illustration in water colors, where the lilies of the valley "mingle with the thorns" in the crown, is suggestive, and will call forth the reader's truest and tenderest sympathies.

"THE LAST LILY" is a poem that will be read by many as though they were reviewing their own lives. It is a poem, but no less a picture-strange as fiction-stranger, being true in the lives of so many. It is illustrated by an etching after "Gilbert."

The water-colored title page is marvellous, both as a creation of fancy and a work of art. A wreath of FLOWER-FAIRIES" and lilies rises gracefully from among the water lilies, and, floating about "Queen Calla," drifts away into mist.

This, our new gift book for the season of 1877, needs but little other recommendation to the public than the popularity of the author's first book, "Violet with Eyes of Blue," and we only ask that those who desire something new, original, and perfectly lovely, will request their bookseller to show them "THE LILIes."'
