NOTES IN SEASON.

D. APPLETON & Co. have nearly ready Dr. William B. Carpenter's book on "Mesmerism, Spiritualism, etc., historically and scientifically considered," in which one of the foremost of English scientific authorities shows how he has been able either to detect fraud throughout the "manifestations" submitted to him or to refer the phenomena to mental and physical causes, particularly hypnotic concentration of the mind and bodily action in answer to expectancy. This is one of the strongest books yet written against "spiritualism," and will command the attention of both friends and

foes.

"TOM BAILEY'S ADVENTURES" is a recent transformation of name from "The Story of a Bad Boy," which is quite too good a story to be hampered by a title that may deter excellent people from buying or reading it. J. R. Osgood & Co. have put this delightful book by Mr. Aldrich (and some think it the best story he ever wrote) into blue-gray paper covers (like "Helen's Babies") for fifty cents, for sum mer reading. It ought to sell as fast as it can' be printed.

MACMILLAN & Co. will have ready shortly the Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography," by Professor Archibald Geikie, who is entitled to high rank both as a physicist and a teacher-a double virtue in the writer of a textbook. The volume, in 16mo, will have several colored maps and be otherwise fully illustrated, but that it will be excellent and tasteful goes with the imprint. Prof. Todhunter has just added to his series of text-books a Natural Philosophy for Beginners," Part I.

"THE SPORTSMAN'S GAZETTEER" is the title of a comprehensive book on hunting and fishing, covering 750 pages, to be published at once by

NEXT week's issue including the new Educational Catalogue, that number will be a double one, and no other will be issued for the fortnight ending July 21st. This arrangement will give our patrons the full worth of their money, while saving labor and expense in dull times.

D. LOTHROP & Co. have ready the first four volumes of their excellent Wide Awake magazine, which they put in a box and label the Wide Awake Library. They offer this for summer entertainment, and are justified in doing so, for it is good the whole year round.

MR. LEAVITT announces the trade sale for

the middle of September. We shall be glad to give our readers full particulars of its attractions, and also a further supply of the arguments against it. There is nothing like knowing both sides.

Hopkins's temperance story "John Bremm," D. LOTHROP & Co. have just ready Mr. and about all the didactic or preceptive portions of the Bible arranged by subjects, forming a little book which the editor, Rev. Dr. H. V.

Dexter, entitles The Unerring Guide."

THE neat "Tourist's Edition" of Gasc's little French-English and English-French dictionary, just issued by Henry Holt & Co., in flexible cloth binding of a new kind, the two volumes in case, ought to make a hit. It is "moighty convanient.”

To those who like good editions, in handy, tasteful shape, we can commend the Globe edition of Milton and the Golden Treasury selection from Herrick, the latter a most elegant ittle volume, just ready at Macmillan & Co.'s.

THE popular editions of Bulwer's novels published by J. B. Lippincott & Co. have been reduced in price: the Globe Edition, 25 volumes, from $1.25 to $1 per volume; Lord Lytton Edition, 25 volumes, from $1.50 to $1.25; Library Edition, 47 volumes, from $1.25 to $1.

ALPHABETICAL LIST OF BOOKS JUST PUBLISHED.

The Prices in this List are for cloth lettered, unless otherwise indicated. Imported Books are marked with an asterisk; Authors' and Subscription Books, or Books published at net prices, with two asterisks; Educational Books published at “wholesale" prices, with a dagger.
