Is. 40.

SELECTION 33 ADVENT

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her,

That her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned;

That she hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

The voice of one that crieth, Pre

to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain;

O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength;

Lift it up, be not afraid; say

unto the cities of Judah, Behold, your God!

Behold, the Lord God will come

as a mighty one, and his arm shall rule for him;

Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompence before him. He shall feed his flock like a shep

pare ye in the wilderness the way herd, he shall gather the lambs in

of the Lord,

Make straight in the desert a high way for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low:

And the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

The voice of one saying, Cry. And one said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

O thou that tellest good tidings

his arm, and carry them in his bosom,

And shall gently lead those that have their young.

Isa. 44.

Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant:

O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.

I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins:

Return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Sing, O ye heavens, for Jehovah hath done it;

Shout, ye lower parts of the earth;

Break forth into singing, ye mountains,

O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and will glorify himself in Israel.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light:

They that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy:

He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench:

He shall bring forth judgment in truth.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set justice in the earth;

They joy before thee according And the isles shall wait for his

to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder:

And his name shall be called
Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty
God, Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace.

Of the increase of his government
and of peace there shall be no end,
Upon the throne of David, and
upon his kingdom,

To establish it, and to uphold it with judgment and with righteousness from henceforth even for

ever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall perform this.

Is. 42.

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen, in whom my soul delighteth:

I have put my spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles:

law.

Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them forth;

He that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it; He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

I the Lord have called thee in

righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee,

And give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison,

And them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

I am the Lord; that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise unto graven images.

Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth.

When thou passest through the colors, and lay thy foundations waters, I will be with thee; with sapphires.

And through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

For I am the Lord thy God, the
Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour.

Is. 54.

For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.

In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; But with everlasting lovingkindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.

For this is as the waters of
Noah unto me;

For as I have sworn that the waters of Noah shall no more go over the earth;

So have I sworn that I will not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee,

And I will make thy windows of agates,

And thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy border of precious stones.

And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thy habitations;

Spare not: lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left;

And thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

For thy Maker is thy husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is thy Redeemer;

The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

tions and generations on them that fear him.

Luke 2.

And she brought forth her firstborn son;

And she wrapped him in swad

dling clothes, and laid him in a manger.

Because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds in

the same country abiding in the field,

And keeping watch by night over their flock.

And an angel of the Lord stood by them,

And the glory of the Lord shone round about them:

And they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not;

For behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people:

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward

men.

[blocks in formation]

Loose him, and bring him. And if any one say unto you, Why do ye this?

Say ye, the Lord hath need of him;

And straightway he will send him back hither.

And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door without in the open street; and they loose him.

And certain of them that stood there said unto them, what do ye, loosing the colt?

And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they

let them go.

And they bring the colt unto Jesus, and cast on him their garments; and he sat upon him. And many spread their garments upon the way; and others branches, which they had cut from the fields.

And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Blessed be the Kingdom of our father David,

That cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. And he entered into Jerusalem, into the temple;

And when he had looked round about upon all things, it being now eventide, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.
