2. FOREIGN OFFICE AND DIPLOMATIC SERVICE AND THE CONSULAR SERVICE.

General Regulations.

Candidates desiring to be admitted to the competitive examination for appointment to the Foreign Office and Diplomatic Service, and to the General, Levant, and Far Eastern branches of the Consular Service, will be required to appear before a Board of Selection, which will meet at the Civil Service Commission (6 Burlington Gardens, London, W. 1), on the second Tuesday in May of each year. The prescribed form of application for admission to interview by the Board must be filled up and sent in so as to reach the Secretary of the Civil Service Commission not later than the 1st April (or 2nd April if the 1st is a Sunday) of the year in which the candidate desires to appear before the Board.

Candidates may attend before the Board of Selection, after application on the prescribed form, at any time after they have attained the age of nineteen.

Every candidate will be informed of the result of his interview shortly after it has taken place. An approved candidate will be required to make a separate application, at such time as may be fixed on each occasion, for admission to the competitive examination, the age for which is twenty-one to twenty-four.

No fee will be payable in respect of attendance before the Board of Selection.

Competitive examinations for appointments in the Foreign

Office and Diplomatic Service, and in the General, Levant, and Far Eastern branches of the Consular Service are generally held in August. Candidates must have attained the age of 21 and must not have attained the age of 24 on the first day of August in the year in which the examination is held.

Intending candidates will find in the Library at King's College the Regulations regarding competitive examinations for appointment to the General and Levant Consular Services to Student Interpreterships in the Far East, and to posts in the Intelligence Officer Grade in the Department of Overseas Trade, together with information respecting Emoluments, Promotion, Pensions, etc.

British Consular Service in China.

If the competitive examination mentioned above is passed, candidates for the British Consular Service in China proceed, after a medical examination, to China, receiving an outfit allowance of £50, and are stationed at Peking for two years, during which time they are styled Student Interpreters and are on probation at a salary of £300, their formal appointment to the service depending on their application to the study of the Chinese language, in which they are examined at the end of their first and second years, their seniority in the service being decided by their order of merit in the second years' examination.

On the completion of their studentship these officers are appointed as local vice-consul and are placed on a scale of pay commencing at £340 per annum rising by annual increments of £20 to £600, with Local Allowance of £50 (£100 if married) and Representation Allowance of £50. These officers are granted Royal Commissions as 2nd Grade Vice-Consuls, and at the present time they may expect to reach the rank of Commissioned Vice-Consul in about 20 years.

As Commissioned Vice-Consul-of whom there are 10-an officer receives a salary of £600 rising by annual increments with Local Allowance of £100, and Representation Allowance of £100, of £25 to £700, and may expect to reach the rank of Consul in about 5 years, when he is placed on a scale of pay of £800 rising by annual increments of £25 to £1000, with representation allowance of £250.

Promotion from Consular rank to that of Consul-General is by selection only. As Consul-General an officer draws pay at the rate of £1200 per annum rising by annual increments of £50 to £1500, with representation allowance of £300.

In addition to the above rates of pay Consular officers receive exchange compensation and a "high cost of living bonus" which varies with the cost of living.

Consular officers are provided with houses, or a rent allowance in lieu thereof, and with a certain amount of heavy furniture, on which rent of 7 per cent. per annum is paid.

3. INLAND REVENUE DEPARTMENT.
TAX INSPECTORATE STAFF.

Appointments to the Tax Inspectorate are made on the results of a competitive examination held in July.

Applications must be lodged with the Secretary, Civil Service Commission, before 3rd May.

4. ROYAL AIR FORCE.

Permanent Commissions for University Candidates. Candidates to be eligible for recommendation by the University must (1) be 23 years of age, (2) be unmarried, (3) have completed three years at the University, (4) have passed the necessary examinations for a degree at the University, (5) have sufficient knowledge of Mathematics and Physics or Engineering to enable them to profit by the technical course of instruction in the subjects which form part of an Air Force Officer's Training.

Preference will be given to the claims of those who (a) have read for a degree in one of the following subjects: (i) General Engineering Science, (ii) Aeronautical Engineering, (iii) Physics, (iv) Mathematics; (b) have become efficient members of the University

Officers Training Corps. This is not intended to limit the discretion of the University to recommend suitable candidates who do not comply with these conditions (a and b) provided they satisfy the Conditions (1), (2), (3), (4), and (5) above.

5. REGULAR ARMY.

Commissions in the Regular Army.

Under the Regulations now in force it is possible for undergraduates who decide late in their academic career to enter the Army without previously having considered making it their profession, to do so on advantageous terms. By a system of antedating the previous objection that a University candidate entered the Army on a level with those junior to him in years has been removed.

The approximate rate of pay of a 2nd Lieutenant on joining including allowances is £316. Candidates on first appointment to a permanent Commission are entitled to a free issue of Revolver, Binoculars, Prismatic Compasses and Camp Kit. The pension provisions are good. Candidates must:

1. Be 21 and under 24 years of age on 15 January for Winter nomination and 15 July for Summer nomination.

2. Be unmarried and a British subject, the son of British subjects. 3. Have resided 3 academic years at the University.

4. Be normally an efficient member of the University Contingent of the O.T.C. at time of nomination.

For the purpose of ante-dating there are 3 grades. Candidates who have:

Grade I.

Grade II.

Graduated with First or Second Class Honours.

Graduated with Third Class Honours or with a Pass Degree with Merit Certificates.

Grade III. Graduated with a Pass Degree.

6. ROYAL NAVAL MEDICAL SERVICE.

I. Ordinary Entry.

Candidates for admission into the Medical Department of the Royal Navy must be not under 21 and not over 28 years of age on the date of the commencement of the Competitive Examination, and be registered under the Medical Acts.

Candidates will be examined in (a) Medicine (including Medical Pathology and Therapeutics), and (b) Surgery (including Surgical Pathology and Clinical Surgery).

The Examination is held in London and occupies four days.

Further particulars may be obtained from the Secretary to the University, or the Medical Director-General, The Admiralty, 68 Victoria Street, London, S.W. 1.

Candidates in possession of Certificate A of the Officers' Training Corps will receive 3 per cent., and those in possession of Certificates A and B, 6 per cent. of the maximum number of marks allotted.

II. Short Service Scheme.

The Admiralty is prepared to accept applications for entry as Surgeon-Lieutenants for Short Service in the Royal Navy.

7. ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS.

Candidates for commissions in the Royal Army Medical Corps must be 21 and not over 28 years of age at the date of the commencement of the entrance examination, and be registered under the Medical Acts in force in the United Kingdom.

The examination will be held in London, and occupy three or four days.
