or a degree of any recognised University, which the Senatus Academicus shall hold to be equivalent to such degree with honours as aforesaid; provided that candidates who hold such a degree from a University outside the United Kingdom may be required, if the Senatus think fit, before beginning their course as Research Students with a view to the degree of Doctor of Letters, to pass an examination equivalent to an honours examination in a group of subjects cognate to their line of work as Research Students.

(2) That they have spent not less than two winter sessions or an equivalent period as Research Students in the University granting the degree, and produce evidence of satisfactory progress in the special study undertaken by them during that period.

(3) That a period of not less than five years shall have elapsed from the date of the graduation required in sub-section (1) of this section.

IX. All candidates for the degree of Doctor of Letters shall present a thesis* or a published memoir or work, which shall be an original contribution to learning, in relation to language, literature or philosophy, to be approved by the Senatus Academicus on the recommendation of a Committee appointed by the Senatus; provided that, if required by the Senatus, a candidate shall also be bound to pass such examination, conducted orally or otherwise, on the subject of his thesis or of his special study as may from time to time be determined. The thesis, or memoir, or work shall be accompanied by a declaration signed by the candidate that it has been composed by himself. If the thesis has not already been published, it shall be published by the candidate in such manner as the Senatus shall approve.

GENERAL.

X. Notwithstanding and in supplement of the provisions of Ordinance No. 13 [General, No. 8-Regulations as to Examinations], sections XIV. and XV., the Senatus Academicus in each University shall appoint such Professors or Lecturers as it may think suitable to conduct the examination of candidates who may offer themselves under the provisions either of Ordinance No. 12 [General, No. 7-Regulations for Degrees in Science] or of this Ordinance, for the degree of Doctor of Science, or Doctor of Letters; and the University Court shall, after consultation

with the Senatus Academicus, appoint an additional Examiner to act along with them. Such additional Examiner shall be a person of recognised eminence in the subject of the thesis, or memoir, or work which is to be submitted for approval. The result of the examination shall be reported to the appropriate Faculty or Committee of Senatus.

XI. The degrees of Doctor of Science in Mental Science or Doctor of Science in Philology shall no longer be conferred by any Scottish University.

XII. Candidates who have already completed the necessary attendance on classes required for the degree of Doctor of Science in Mental Science or Doctor of Science in Philology, under regulations hitherto in force in any Scottish University, may proceed to the Degree of Doctor of Letters, under this Ordinance:-provided such candidates comply with the provisions of Section IX. hereof, and that a period of not less than five years shall have elapsed from the date of their graduation as Masters of Arts.

XIII. The degrees of Doctor of Science, and Doctor of Letters shall in no case be conferred on persons who have not satisfied the conditions hereinbefore set forth, and shall not be conferred honoris causâ tantum.

XV. The fee to be paid for the degree of Doctor of Letters shall be fifteen guineas.

XVI. This Ordinance shall come into force from and after the date of its approval by Her Majesty in Council.

Supplementary Ordinance, No. 167 (1897).

I. The Thesis, memoir or work submitted by candidates for the Degrees of Doctor of Science, or Doctor of Letters, shall in each case be examined by the Additional Examiner to be appointed by the University Court under the provisions of Section X. of the said Ordinance, as well as by the Examiner or Examiners to be appointed by the Senatus under Section IX. of the same Ordinance.

II. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section IX. of Ordinance No. 14 of the Commissioners, under the Universities (Scotland) Act, 1858, it shall be in the power of the University Court to appoint as Additional Examiners, under the provisions of Section X. of the said Ordinance, persons who are Professors or Lecturers in any Scottish University other than the University granting the degree.

LODGING OF THESES AND PAYMENT OF' FEES.

The Thesis or published memoir or work of each candidate must, along with the signed Declaration that it has been composed by himself, be lodged in duplicate with the Secretary of the University not later than 1st October for the Spring Graduation, and 1st January for the Summer Graduation. The fee of £15 15s. and Admission Fee of £1 1s., when exigible, must be paid at the same time. The Thesis should be printed or typewritten, and must contain, either at the beginning or end, a summary of its salient points. After a Thesis has been approved, the Degree is not formally conferred until the Candidate shall have published the Thesis in terms of the Ordinance. The candidate shall also supply at the expense of the University, 50 copies in sheets, to be utilised for exchange purposes, in the series of "University Studies" (Senatus, 27th November, 1923, p. 373. Re-examination Fee, £5 5s.

SCIENCE (D.Sc.).

UNDER UNIVERSITY COURT ORDINANCE NO. 97; ABERDEEN NO. 11
[REGULATIONS FOR CERTAIN DEGREES IN PURE SCIENCE].

XXI. A Graduate of the University of Aberdeen may make a written application to the Senatus to be admitted as a candidate for

the Degree of Doctor of Science after the expiry of five years from the date of his graduation.

+ XXII. Graduates of other Universities, specially recognised for the purpose by the University Court, on the recommendation of the Senatus Academicus, or holders of the University Certificate mentioned in Section XXIII, hereof, may make a written application to the Senatus Academicus to be admitted as candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Science, provided that they have held the office of Professor, Reader, Lecturer, or Assistant in the University of Aberdeen for not less than four terms at the date of such application; but the Degree shall not be conferred upon any such candidate unless he still holds the office of Professor, Reader, Lecturer, or Assistant at the time of graduation.

+ XXIII. Research students within the meaning of Ordinance No. 61-General No. 23-(Regulations for the encouragement of Special Study and Research and for the appointment of Research Fellows) of the Commissioners under the Universities (Scotland) Act, 1889, who have prosecuted some special study or research in the University of Aberdeen under that Ordinance, may make a written application to the Senatus Academicus to be admitted as candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Science, provided :—

(1) That they have obtained the Degree of Bachelor of Science or the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in any Scottish University, or such Degree in any other University, specially recognised by the University Court for the purposes of this Section, as the Senatus Academicus shall declare to be equivalent to the Degree of Bachelor of Science of the University of Aberdeen. For the purposes of this Section and the immediately preceding Section a UniversityCertificate granted by the University of Oxford or by the University of Cambridge to a woman who has fulfilled the ordinary conditions for graduation will be accepted as equivalent to a Degree.

(2) That they have spent not less than two academical years as Research Students under recognised teachers of the University of Aberdeen and produce to the Senatus evidence of satisfactory progress in the special study undertaken by them during that period.

(3) That a period of not less than five years shall, at the time when the application is made, have elapsed from the date of the graduation required under Sub-Section (1) of this Section.

XXIV. All candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Science shall

present a thesis, or memoir, or work, which shall be an original contribution to Science, to be approved by the Senatus Academicus on the recommendation of the Faculty of Science; provided that, unless specially exempted by the Senatus, a candidate shall also be bound to pass such an examination, conducted orally or otherwise, as may from time to time be determined. The thesis, or memoir, or work, shall be accompanied by a declaration signed by the candidate, that it has been composed by himself, that it has not been accepted in any previous application for a Degree, and that the work of which it is a record has been done by himself. The thesis shall be presented by the candidate in such form as the Senatus shall approve, and it shall be deposited in the University Library.

XXV. The Degree of Doctor of Science shall in no case be conferred on persons who have not satisfied the conditions herein before set forth, and shall not be conferred honoris causâ tantum.

XXVI. The fee to be paid for the Degree of Doctor of Science shall be fifteen guineas, and shall be payable when the candidate makes written application to be admitted as a candidate for the Degree.

XXVII. The Senatus Academicus shall have power, with the approval of the University Court, to make regulations regarding the conditions upon which the Degrees of other Universities shall be recognised for the purpose of Sections XXII. and XXIII. hereof, or regarding the time and manner of making application and the sending in of theses, or memoirs, or works, for the Degree of Doctor of Science.

A Candidate who has obtained the Degree of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), granted after examination by any University recognised by the University Court for the purposes of Sections XXII. and XXIII., may make a written application to the Senatus Academicus to be admitted as a Candidate for the Degree of Doctor of Science, subject always to the Regulations contained in Sections XXII. and XXIII., and provided that Sub-Section (3) of Section XXIII. shall apply to Candidates under Section XXII.

XXVIII. From and after the date at which this Ordinance comes into operation, Ordinances No. 12 (General No. 7) and No. 155 (General No. 38) of the Commissioners under the Universities (Scotland) Act, 1889, Sections XV. and XIX. of Ordinance No. 13 (General No. 8), and Sections I., II., III., and X. of Ordinance No.
