12. THE STRUTHERS MEDAL AND PRIZE (IN ANATOMY).*

Founded in 1891, from a fund amounting to £400, collected by Sir John Struthers, M.D. Edin., 1845; LL.D. Glasg., 1885, who was Professor of Anatomy in the University from 1863 to 1889.

The annual proceeds of the fund are applied in part for the purchase of a gold medal, which, together with the unexpended balance as a money prize, is awarded annually by the Professor of Anatomy for the best dissection or preparation, or series of dissections or preparations, or for the best original research in Anatomy. The Medal and Prize are open to all those who are attending, or have attended, the Practical Anatomy Class in the University. The dissections or preparations of the successful competitor are to be placed in the Anatomical Museum, and marked with his name.

The award will be made at the end of each Summer Session, and all dissections or preparations must be sent to the Anatomical Department before 20th June in each year.

13. THE VENN PRIZE IN PHYSIOLOGY, PATHOLOGY, AND PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS.

Founded in 1920, under the Will of the late Dr. Albert John Venn, M.B. Abdn., 1873, M.D. Abdn., 1875.

A Prize of the value of £10 or thereby, is awarded annually for the best Essay on a prescribed subject. The subject is selected from the Departments of Physiology, Pathology, and Pharmacology and Therapeutics in successive years in the order stated. The Prize is open to all Medical Students matriculated in the Academical year of award, who have not graduated in Medicine. Each Essay must bear a motto and be accompanied by a sealed envelope bearing the same motto and enclosing the name and address of the candidate.

The subject of the Essay for 1928 has been selected from the Department of Physiology, and is “The H. ion concentration of the blood; the mechanism of its maintenance and the functional effects of alterations in its amount."

Essays must be lodged with the Secretary of the University on or before 31st October, 1928. The subject to be prescribed in 1929 will be taken from the Department of Pathology.

Bursaries in Faculty of Medicine.

The Competition for Medical Bursaries will take place or Monday, 17th October, 1927, at 10 A.M.

Candidates are required to intimate in writing to the Secretary of the University, ON OR BEFORE MONDAY, 10TH OCTOBER, 1927.

1. Their Names in full.

2. The group of Bursaries for which they are Candidates.

3. The Subjects of Examination selected.

(A.) Bursaries Open to First Year Students.

The Competition will be restricted to Students entering on their first Winter Session.

The subjects of the Competition are: (a) Physics, (b) Zoology, (c) Botany, d) Inorganic Chemistry and the Competitors may select any three of these subjects.

Physics." A Manual of Physics," by H. C, H. Candy, and "Elementary Physics," by G. Stead.

Zoology.-Thomson's "Outlines of Zoology."

Botany.-Fritsch and Salisbury, Introduction to the Study of Plants," and "Introduction to the Structure and Reproduction of Plants," or Bower, "Botany of the Living Plant."

Inorganic Chemistry.-Alex. Smith's "Elementary Inorganic Chemistry," or James Walker's "Inorganic Chemistry."

(B). Bursaries Open to Second Year Students.

The Competition will be open to all students about to commence the second Winter Session of their Medical Studies.

The subjects of Examination are (1) Botany, (2) Zoology, (3) Physics and (4) Chemistry or Anatomy.

Books recommended :—

Botany.-As above.

Zoology.-As above.

Physics.-Books prescribed for Medical Physics Class.

Chemistry.-Findlay's "Physical Chemistry for Students of Medicine," and Walker's Organic Chemistry for Students of Medicine." Anatomy.-Books prescribed for Anatomy Class.

Bursaries Vacant in 1927.

The following will probably be the Bursaries to be awarded on the result of the competition in October, 1927 :

I. For Students entering on their First Winter Session. Liddel (Town Council), £30; Mather (Town Council), £30; Dr. Isaac Gilchrist, £20.

II. For Students entering on their Second Winter Session.

Thompson, £45; Thompson, £40; Thompson, £30; Marr, £30; Watts, £30; Grant, £25; Greig (Fyvie), £10.

The following Bursaries are awarded on the previous record of Candidates, as detailed under Bursaries, Scholarships, etc., supra: Grant (Second year); Knox (Third year); Gillanders (Fourth or Fifth year); John Milne (Arts Magistrand).
