Mental Diseases.

The Course of Instruction in Mental Diseases extends over a period of at least two and a half months.

The class meets at least two hours a week and receives systematic, clinical and pathological instruction.

The clinical class is divided into separate groups-each group not exceeding a size convenient for management within the wards of the Mental Hospital.

The main feature of the course is a clinical one.

Students are required to examine patients for themselves and to write clinical accounts of them.

Statutory certificates of lunacy and other medico-legal documents are written by each student during the course.

Arrangements are made for extra teaching in the higher departments of medical psychology and cerebral pathology for those students and graduates who desire such higher instruction; also for candidates desirous of obtaining the certificate of the Medico-Psychological Association of Great Britain and Ireland. Medical Inspection and Treatment of School Children and School Hygiene. Lecturer: George Rose, M. B., C.M.

Two or three Lectures dealing with :

Method of School Medical Inspection; Duties of School Nurses; Scholars' Record Cards; Process of Medical Inspection; Most Common Defects found; Notification of Defects; Medical Treatment; Acts of Parliament dealing with Medical Treatment; Responsibility of Parent; Powers of Education Authorities to compel or to provide Treatment; Re-examination.

Session in School during Medical Inspection. Session testing Vision and Hearing; Visiting Eye Clinic. Visit to Special Schools-Mental Defective, Oral, and Ringworm. Examination of School Buildings considering site, classrooms, ventilation, etc. Remarks on Mental Deficiency and Lunacy Act.

Extra-Academical Teachers.

The following Lecturers have been specially recognised by the University Court as "Extra-Academical Teachers". Directions to Students.

All applicants for admission to the University must, in the first place, submit their certificates of preliminary qualification, whether these be Preliminary Examination certificates, Leaving certificates, or other certificates, to the Secretary of the Entrance Board, 81 North Street, St. Andrews, together with a fee of 5s. If found duly qualified the applicant will receive the Board's Certificate of fitness, which must then be presented to the Secretary to the University.

In arranging their Curriculum, Students should note the following:

1. It is strongly recommended that students commence their medical studies in the Winter Term, and the time-table of classes has been arranged with this in view.

No departure from the Curriculum indicated in the time-tables will be permitted, unless very strong reasons are advanced.

2. Arts classes shall not be allowed to interfere with attendance on the classes proper to the Second and succeeding years of the Medical curriculum.+

3. A candidate who has not passed the examinations in at least THR E of the subjects of the First Division shall not be allowed to attend any part of the qualifying course in Physiology.*

4. A candidate who has not passed the Second Professional Examination will not be allowed to attend qualifying courses of the third or succeeding years.*

5. Students shall not attend the class of Systematic Materia Medica who have not attended a qualifying course in Physiology.†

6. Students shall not attend the class of Forensic Medicine or of Public Health unless they have previously attended courses of instruction in Materia Medica and Pathology, for at least two terms. †

7. Students shall not attend Clinical Lectures at the Infirmary until they have passed the Second Professional Examination.†

8. Students shall not attend qualifying courses in Clinical Surgery and Clinical Medicine concurrently.†

9. Students shall not hold Clinical Clerkships in the Medical Department in their first term of Clinical Medicine.†

10. Students shall not attend the course of instruction in Anæsthetics before they have attended the class of Materia Medica. †

11. Students shall not attend the course of instruction in Infectious Diseases until they have completed one term of Systematic Medicine.†

12. Every student before commencing the study of practical Midwifery (ie. Midwifery cases) should have held the offices of Clinical Medieal Clerk and Surgical Dresse, and should have attended a course of Lectures on Surgery and Midwifery. (Resolution of the General Medical Council.)

13. Students are expected during the term in which they are attending the Royal Hospital for Sick Children to attend Clinical courses in Gynecology, Maternity (including ante-natal work), and Infant Welfare.

N.B. The attention of Students is specially directed to the following regulation:

Students shall not attend the courses in Surgery

and Clinical Surgery before they have attended the Courses in Practice of Medicine and Clinical Medicine.

Pre-Registration Examinations in Physics and Chemistry.

The foregoing Time Table in Anatomy is the minimum. Those students who have satisfied the requirements for attendance at the Graduation Classes in Chemistry and Physics before the commencement of the Winter Term will attend in the Anatomy Department at hours to be fixed by the Professor of Anatomy.

Second Professional Examination in Anatomy and Physiology.

+ By resolution of the Senatus of date 8th and approved by the University Court on 27th July, 1926, the following regulation under Section XIV. of University Court Ordinance No. 70; General No. 3 (Regulations as to admission to the Scottish Universities) has been adopted :—

Attendance on the Graduation Class of Physics or the Graduation Class of Chemistry for the Degrees of M. B. and Ch.B. shall not qualify for graduation unless the student has, previous to such attendance, produced evidence satisfactory to the Senatus that he has acquired a sufficient general knowledge of Physics or of Chemistry as the case may be. The following certificates will be accepted as satisfying the above condition:-(a) a certificate of having passed an examination in Physics and Chemistry for a Degree in Arts, Science, or Medicine at any University in the United Kingdom or any other University specially recognised for the purpose by the University Court; (b) a certificate of having passed the University PreRegistration Examination; (c) a certificate of having passed the School Leaving Examination in Science (Chemistry and Physics) of the Scottish Education Department, provided that in addition to the Leaving Certificate, there is also presented a certificate from the Headmaster of the School of which the student was a pupil, certifying that the student has satisfactorily passed through a courseofi instruction covering substantially the course laid down in the UNIVERSITY CALENDAR for the Pre-Registration Examination in Chemistry, and that the student had, in the case of Physics, satisfactorily pursued courses of instruction in the various branches of mechanics, heat, light and magnetism, and electricity.
