Section VII. of University Court Ordinance No. 104; Aberdeen No. 14 [Regulations as to the Office of Reader, Granting of Degrees, and Amendment of Ordinances].

XXVIII. This Ordinance shall come into operation on the day on which it is approved by His Majesty in Council.

THE NORTH OF SCOTLAND COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE.

The Aberdeen and North of Scotland College of Agriculture was established in 1904 for the purpose of developing Education and Research in Agriculture in the North of Scotland. It was subsequently incorporated, as the North of Scotland College of Agriculture, under the Companies (Consolidation) Act, 1908. The Board of Governors consists of representatives appointed by various County Councils, Town Councils, Secondary Education Committees and other Bodies, including the University of Aberdeen. The University's Representatives are The Principal, Dr. J. E. Crombie, and Dr. George Smith.

A Prospectus containing full information regarding the various courses of instruction, Time Tables, Bursaries, particulars of Research Work, Extension Classes, Planters Certificate Course, etc., may be had from the Secretary of the Agricultural College, 41 Union Street, Aberdeen.

SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, BURSARIES
AND PRIZES IN SCIENCE.

In the case of all Scholarships, Bursaries and Prizes awarded on the results of Competitions, the Senatus reserves the right to make no award in the event of Candidates failing to reach a sufficient standard of proficiency.

Fullerton Scholarship.

This Scholarship, of the annual value of £100, tenable for two years, was founded in terms of Ordinance No. 117 of the Universities Commissioners (1889), and is subject to the following regulations :

1. The Scholarship is awarded on the results of a Special Examination, written, oral and practical, commencing on the first Tuesday of the Winter Term in the Faculty of Science. Examiners are the Professors of the several subjects of examination.

2. Candidates must be Bachelors of Science with Honours of this University of not more than two years' standing.

3. The examination shall embrace any three of the following subjects, to be chosen by each candidate, and intimated to the Secretary on or before 30th June:

Chemistry.

Human Anatomy, including Anthropology.
Physiology.

Geology, including Mineralogy.

Zoology, including Comparative Anatomy.

Botany, including Vegetable Physiology.

Of these three, one shall be selected as the chief subject, and the other two shall be subsidiary.

4. The standard of knowledge required in the chief subject shall be high, and in the subsidiary subjects shall not fall below a good standard for the degree of B.Sc.

5. The successful candidate shall be required to obtain the sanction of the Senatus to the special higher studies or research in which he proposes to engage in terms of the Ordinance, and shall also submit a Report on his work as Fullerton Scholar, to be approved by the Senatus before payment of the final instalment of the Scholarship.

A. Junior Scholarships.

1. There shall be three Junior Scholarships open to competition each year.

2. The value of each Junior Scholarship shall be the sum of money necessary to pay the fees of the classes attended by the scholar with the approval of the Faculty of Science; provided always that, if the class fees of a scholar are being paid in whole or part by the Carnegie Trust the value of his Junior Scholarship shall be diminished by a sum equal to that paid by the Carnegie Trust. 3. Each scholarship shall be tenable for three years.

4. No Arts Bursar or Scholar can hold a Junior Scholarship.

5. The candidates will be tested by Oral or viva voce examination in English, French and German; and there shall be one paper of an elementary character in Arithmetic and Elementary Mathematics and similarly one paper of an elementary character in Geography (including Physical Geography).

6. The candidates shall be tested by persons appointed for the purpose by the Faculty of Science.

7. The tests will be held in the first week of June in each year and will consist of

(1) An Oral Examination in English, French and German. (2) Written Examinations in Arithmetic, Elementary Mathematics and in Elementary Geography (including Physical Geography).

The Examiners réserve the right to make no award in the event of a candidate failing to reach a sufficient standard of proficiency in the Examination.

Candidates are required to lodge their names with the Secretary to the University not later than 15th May.

Junior Scholars.

B. Senior Scholarships.

1. There shall be as many Senior Scholarships as the free revenue of the fund, after making the provision necessary for paying the Junior Scholarships, will permit.

2. A Senior Scholarship shall be tenable for two years.

3. The value of a Senior Scholarship shall be £200 for the first year and £250 for the second year.

4. In the first year of tenure the Scholar shall prosecute Higher Study in one of the Departments of Natural Science or Natural History in the University of Aberdeen * and shall assist if required in demonstrations or otherwise. The scholar shall spend the second year of his tenure of the scholarship in Higher Study of his subject elsewhere under supervision approved of by the Faculty of Science. The continuance of the Scholarship for a second year shall be dependent on the Scholar having made satisfactory progress in Higher Study during his first year.

5. A graduate or student in any Faculty who has attended for three years at a University may become a candidate for these scholarships provided always that no person can become a candidate for a senior Scholarship if more than three years have elapsed since leaving the University.

6. The candidates shall be tested by persons appointed for the purpose by the Faculty of Science. The subjects of the tests shall be English, French, German, Arithmetic, Mathematics (Pure and Applied), Geography (including Physical Geography), Chemistry, Geology, Mineralogy, Zoology, Physiology, Comparative Anatomy and Botany.

7. A GENERAL or QUALIFYING EXAMINATION shall be held consisting of two papers of two hours each, the first paper to consist of English, French, German, Arithmetic and Geography; the second paper to consist of Mathematics, Chemistry, Geology, Minerology, Zoology, Physiology, Comparative Anatomy and Botany.

N.B.-No candidate who fails to reach a sufficient standard in the General Examination will be admitted to the second examination. `

8. A SECOND or SPECIAL EXAMINATION shall be held on which the Scholarships shall be awarded for special excellence in one particular subject, selected by the candidate from a given group, and intimated when he enters for the examination. The groups shall be as follows:

9. A Scholarship will be awarded annually to the best candidate in each subject of the group, provided always that in the opinion of the Examiners, the candidate reaches a sufficient standard of excellence.

10. In the event of there being no candidate of sufficient merit in any one or more of the subjects, more than one scholarship may be awarded in any other subject or subjects of the group.

11. In the event of there being more than two Scholarships in any year, a Scholarship, subject to the above conditions, will be awarded in each of the three sciences, Botany, Geology and Zoology.

12. The General Examination will be held on the Monday nearest the 14th of July First paper from 10 to 12 noon; Second paper from 2 to 4 p.m. The Second Examination will be held on the following Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 to 12 noon on each of the two days.

13. Candidates are required to lodge their names together with the subject selected for the Second Examination with the Secretary to the University not later than 14th June.

14. The Scholarships shall be paid in two moieties on the 1st October and 1st April of each year of tenure.

C. General.

A scholar may incur suspension or forfeiture of his Scholarship on the ground of misconduct, or on the ground of his failure to obtain class certificates, or to produce such other evidence as may be required, that he is prosecuting his studies in a manner satisfactory to the Senatus Academicus.

D. Disposal of Surplus Revenue.

In the event of any part of the revenue of the Scholarship Fund not being payable from any cause, such revenue shall be retained as revenue and not added to the Capital of the Fund.
