Instituted in 1923 in conjunction with the London and North Eastern Railway Company for the purpose of conducting in successive years evening courses of Lectures on Railway Geography. Railway Law, Railway Economics, and Railway Operating.

The Lectures are primarily intended for persons in the employment of the London and North Eastern Railway Company, but anyone interested may attend.

At the close of each course of Lectures, those in attendance will be given an opportunity of presenting themselves for Examination, and if successful, will be awarded a Certificate which will exempt from further examination in the subject passed for the Secondary Examination conducted by the London and North Eastern Railway Company.

During Session 1927-28 the course of Lectures will deal with Railway Geography. The Lectures, which commence on Tuesday, 18th October, at 8 P.M., will be delivered on subsequent Tuesdays at that hour throughout the Winter and Spring terms.

Fee for each Course 10s.

Admission to the University, Matriculation, Carnegie Grants for Fees and Bursaries.

Admission to the University.

1. UNIVERSITY COURT ORDINANCE No. 70; GENERAL No. 3.

A General Ordinance regulating admission to the Scottish Universities was made by the four University Courts and came into force on 31st December, 1918. The provisions of the Ordinance are as follows:

ORDINANCE OF THE UNIVERSITY COURTS OF THE UNIVERSITIES OF ST. ANDREWS, GLASGOW, ABERDEEN, AND EDINBURGH No. 70; GENERAL No. 3 [REGULATIONS AS ΤΟ ADMISSION TO THE SCOTTISH UNIVERSITIES FOR PURPOSES OF GRADUATION], APPROVED BY HIS MAJESTY IN COUNCIL, 23RD OCTOBER, 1918. I. A Scottish Universities Entrance Board (hereinafter called the Entrance Board) shall be constituted, consisting of sixteen members, to be appointed in the manner hereinaft r provided. II. The University Court of each of the four Universities shall appoint four members of the Entrance Board; and of these members two at least shall be Professors or Lecturers who conduct courses of instruction qualifying for graduation in Arts.

III. On the occasion of the first appointment of members, each University Court shall appoint four members to hold office from the first day of February next following the date on which this Ordinance comes into operation, namely, one member for four years, one member for three years, one member for two years, and one member for one year. Thereafter each University Court shall, not later than the last day of November of each year, appoint one member to hold office for four years from the first day of February in the following year. A retiring member shall be eligible for reappointment. In the event of a casual vacancy, the University Court concerned shall appoint a member to fill the vacancy, and he shall hold office for the remainder of his predecessor's term.

IV. The Entrance Board shall elect one of its members as its Chairman, to hold office for such period as it shall determine; it shall appoint a suitable person as its Secretary, and determine

from time to time the Secretary's duties, tenure of office, and emoluments; it shall make provision for such clerical assistance to the Secretary as may be necessary; and it shall provide a convenient central office at one of the University towns or elsewhere for the transaction of its business.

V. The duties of the Entrance Board shall include the following: (1) In the case of schools in Scotland which regularly present candidates for the Group Certificates of the Scotch Education Department, to determine, after consultation with the said Department, as to the length and general character of the course or courses of secondary education, the satisfactory completion of which, as attested by the Group Certificates of the Scotch Education Department, may from time to time be deemed suitable by the Universities as entitling applicants for admission thereto to enter upon a course of study qualifying for graduation in any Faculty; and to frame General Regulations accordingly; (2) In the case of other schools in Scotland, to determine whether their curriculum of secondary education is of such a character that evidence of its satisfactory completion, as attested by the Group Certificates of the Scotch Education Department or otherwise, may from time to time be deemed suitable by the Universities as entitling applicants for admission thereto to enter upon a course of study qualifying for graduation in any Faculty; and to frame General Regulations accordingly;

(3) To determine what leaving or other Certificates shall be accepted by the Board as qualifying for admission to the Universities in the case of applicants for admission from outside Scotland; and to frame General Regulations accordingly;

(1) To determine all questions relating to the tests of fitness for admission to the Universities to be required of applicants either from Scotland or from outside Scotland who, owing to exceptional circumstances, have not been able to fulfil the normal conditions referred to in Sub-Sections (1) (2) and (3), and are therefore unable to comply with the General Regulations of the Board; and to frame Special Regulations accordingly;

(5) To publish from time to time a list of the Leaving or other Certificates, in addition to the Group Certificates of the Scotch Education Department, which the Board are prepared to accept as qualifying for admission to the Universities;

(6) To provide for the verification and attestation of all
