AMPLE EPITOME

OF

LITERATURE, FINE ARTS, AND SCIENCES,

FOR

JANUARY AND FEBRUARY, 1827.

THE

HE LITERARY GAZETTE for the Months of January and February, just published (consisting of Eight Weekly Numbers, closely, but clearly and distinctly printed), may be considered as a fair specimen of that periodical. Besides numerous interesting Novelties which have since appeared in almost every form at home and abroad, it contains Reviews, in January, of fifty-three-and in February, of forty-eight* volumes of New Works, making together one hundred and one-viz. one folio, six quartos, forty-one octavos, and fifty-three duodecimos, and smaller sizes. In its other departments it is equally full there are the usual Monthly Medical, Agricultural, Gardening, and Astronomical Reports, by eminent writers; Poetry by L. E. L. and other Contributors ;-Correspondence, with the latest Intelligence from Paris, Madrid, Rome, Naples, &c.; Twenty-five Notices of New Publications in the Fine Arts, together with Exhibitions, &c.; the Biographies of the Duke of York, the Marquis of Hastings, W. Gifford, Miss Benger, (the second and fourth from distinguished pens): Mrs. Johnstone, Author of Clan Albin, &c. Malte Brun, and Count Orloff: Eight curious Traditionary Legends of the Western Highlands of Scotland; Reviews of New Music; Notices of Concerts; Criticisms on the Drama; Accounts of Scientific Inventions and of Improvements in Philosophy and the useful Arts,-such as Natural History, Geology, Numismatics, Antiquities, Mechanics, Pathology, Zoology, Botany, &c. &c. : the first Public Statement of Architectural and other Alterations to be made in London; Description of his Majesty's Private Apartments; Intelligence of African and other Expeditions; Accounts of and Extracts from rare and unpublished Works, for example, Sotheby's fine Polyglot of the Georgics in six languages, and the Earl of Bridgewater's Memoirs, with their remarkable Anecdotes of eminent Persons; the Exposure of Literary Plagiarists and Literary Pretenders; a distinct though concise View of valuable Foreign Publications; the Proceedings of Learned Bodies; a mass of Literary Intelligence; and many Varieties, instructive or amusing. Thus, from the mode of printing in columns, the contents of two large octavos are compressed into the small compass of two months' publication, and the above Summary is but an imperfect Index to the matters in 128 pages of the LITERARY GAZETTE, price 5s. 4d. stitched in covers.

Published by W. A. SCRIPPS, 7, Wellington-Street, Strand, and continued in Weekly Numbers, price 8d.; or stamped, for Country Circulation by Post, price 1s.

The Reviews of this Month (containing the smaller number of Works), it is curious to calculate, as a proof of the diligence required for such a periodical, implies the perusal and consideration of about three hundred folio, sixteen hundred quarto, four thousand octavo, and eight thousand duodecimo pages.
