PREFACE.

THE following Essay, to which the first Carmichael Prize has been awarded, was lodged on the 1st February, a motto and the following notice being prefixed: "The writer of this Essay submits three printed proofs, having found that the scrivenery of as many copies would be nearly as expensive, and would produce the matter in a bulky and not very readily legible form for adjudication. The writing of competitive essays in an author's own hand has been very generally considered objectionable." Being aware that the adjudication would be made by three members of the Council only, I did not feel myself disqualified for the competition by the fact that I had the honour of a seat at that board. I took no part in the selection of the judges, I did not avail myself of any sources of information to which as a Councillor I might have had access, and studiously, and I believe successfully, endeavoured to keep my authorship unknown.

With a view of rendering the Essay intelligible to legislators, to whom, according to the testator's wish, copies are to be sent, and useful to those choosing a profession, some topics which my brethren may

think unnecessary have been introduced. Such information is, however, at present only afforded by introductory lectures which come too late to aid deliberation. I feel that apologies are due for many faults of style and other shortcomings, but those who know the distractions of a busy professional life, will be lenient judges. Three-fourths of the Essay was written during the Christmas vacation, and as the day for lodging it approached, the remainder had to be very hurriedly arranged. As it is right that the Essay should appear just as it was when submitted for competition, no additions have been made during the three months which have since elapsed.

I regret I cannot present and discuss the "Scheme of Medical Tuition," published (Lancet, April 4th, 11th, and 18th) by Professor Parkes, for like all the essays of that philosopher, it is profoundly learned and thoroughly sensible. He urges that the primary or scientific subjects should be taught tutorially and demonstratively during the first two years, and that practical medicine and surgery should be the exclusive business of the third and fourth.
