By AMOS DEAN, LL.D.

I vol., 16m0, $1.

This little manual, taken from the papers of the late Amos Dean, is written in that concise attractive style of which he was so thoroughly a master, and will be welcomed not only by our lawyers who studied under him during the seventeen years he was at the head of the Albany Law School, but by every historical student.

I have read the advance sheets of Mr. J. C. Fillmore's "Pianoforte Music," which you kindly sent me. It is a thoughtful and very interesting book, which will no doubt find a wide circle of readers among artists and amateurs. I shall be glad to recommend it to our students as a worthy contribution to our American musical literature.

THE BOOK-BUYER and THE BOOK-MAKER

We

Are brought together by the book-seller. Such at least should be the function which that worthy
performs. And such it was in the olden time. He was the intelligent guide to book-buyers,
and the friend of book-makers. And he certainly cannot be the enemy of the book-maker
to-day, for it is in diffusing his wares that he makes a living. But the modern book-seller has
ceased to be such an index rerum, or living catalogue, as was the old-time book-seller.
suppose there are on an average a couple of dozen new books of all sorts published every week.
And yet the mourners are in the streets bewailing the departure of the old-time book-seller,
who could tell them everything his wares contained. A modern business man cannot keep up
with all the new issues, nor spend his time in retailing their abstracted and concentrated in-
formation for the edification of the public. He can tell you what sells.

But because the book-seller cannot read all the books that should be on his shelves, and
make abstracts for the benefit of his customers, he must have the books themselves for the in-
spection of the public if he aims at something more than becoming a mere middleman or agent
for the publisher. It is one of the necessities of his profession which he can avoid only by sink-
ing that profession to the level of a commission merchant. As the farmer needs his implements,
the mechanic his tools, and the lawyer his library, the book-seller must keep a stock of salable
books to sell, or go out of the business.

Now, book-sellers have for some time been exercised in selecting their stock. They can't
carry everything, and it requires a fine discrimination and good judgment to select just what will
leave their shelves quickly and turn their money. There are certain books which it is always
profitable to carry, but a man can't forever look around; he must begin to do. Many book-
sellers have begun-and they congratulate themselves on it now-by ordering from our cata=
logue. Of course we don't publish all the books a book-seller needs to keep; but we have a good
many that he wants. And those seem to be just the thing when others prove dead stock. Why?
Because not being particularly stylish, they never go out of style; not making any special pre-
tence to be fashionable, they never remain on the shelf when the fashion changes. They are
very attractive, respectable, thoroughgoing, practical, always in demand, and, like your decently
dressed, common-sense, practical man, never at a discount.

Our line of Bibles includes the very best in three languages. Our English Family Bibles,
with the Revised New Testament, stand without a peer; and of them Brown's Explanatory
stands at the head. This is a Protestant Bible. The English Catholic Bibles, in addition to
their other valuable features, contain the Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and are the most
complete Catholic Bibles published.

Our German Family Bible, Protestant, is Luther's own translation, finely and profusely il-
lustrated, with notes by the great Commentator, OTTO DELITSCH. Our Catholic German Bible
is the only authorized version, and the one always sought after in this country.

Our Spanish Catholic Bible is the finest ever published.

Our Teachers' Bibles contain invaluable matter not found in either the Oxford or Bagster Bibles. And there are several editions of smaller Bibles, handy volumes for daily use.

Our Miscellaneous Stock includes standard works on Biography, History, Travel, and Adventure, Poetry, Religion, Fiction, Humorous Works, Medical Works, Agricultural Works, Practical Works, etc., etc.

Our Text-Books include the following:

An Introduction to the Study of English Literature and Literary Criticism. By Prof.
JAMES BALDWIN. 2 vols., octavo.

French Syntax. By Prof. JAMES A. HARRISON, Washington and Lee University. 1 vol., 12mo.
The Artist and his Mission. By Rev. Wм. M. REILY, Ph.D., Palatinate College. 1 vol., 12mo.
A Manual of the German Language. By AUGUSTIN KNOFLACH. I vol., 12mo.

The Science and Art of Elocution; or, How to Read and Speak. By FRANK H. FENNO. 1
vol., 12mo.
