THE BOOKS FOR THE SCHOOLS

Have been variously named. We have educational series, such as the "Normal," the
"Eclectic," the "Inductive," etc., each of which names is thought to imply some peculiar virtue
in the books themselves. Now, we have been casting about for a good name for our series of
School-Books. If we were to be guided merely by what is the principle upon which they
are written, it might be thought we were throwing mud upon our neighbors. But we need not
do that. And we are in no mood for it. The better their school-books are the better for those
who are obliged to use them.

We ought to call our books the Modern Common-Sense Series; for they are written upon a
common-sense basis. They contain only what is necessary; the results of the latest investigations,
and set them forth simply, directly, and practically. They go right to the point. They don't
stand off and sight it, and then make a great blowing and fussing trying to get a hit at it. Aren't
they therefore emphatically the Books for the Schools?

First, there is Baldwin's Introduction to the Study of English Lit-
erature and Literary Criticism, in two octavo volumes. The end, object, and aim
of this work is to guide the student in threading his way through the mazes of English literature.
English literature is a pretty big wood by this time, of trees good, bad, and indifferent. The
student needs to know where the pleasant places lie, where the best prospects of this mighty
forest are to be had, where are the beautiful trees, where the copses, and where the tangles. And
this work is just the book that will tell him. It don't tell him how much lumber is in the forest,
because he is not a wood-chopper. It don't tell him where are the oaks blasted by lightning, But
it points out the tall and stately trees, shows the artistic effect of their mighty gnarled branches
with a background of less imposing neighbors. Some people would lead you into such a forest
and praise every tree indiscriminately. But Professor Baldwin is an enthusiastic forester, and he
knows where are the beauties of wood and copse and brake and fen, and you follow pleased and

delighted by his intelligent guidance. This is common-sense, isn't it?

There is Harrison's French Syntax. Everybody knows that the French language
is the most complicated of any, living or dead. It is so flexible that the most delicate shade of
thought can be expressed by it as by no other tongue. The French say that what cannot be expres-
sed better in their language than in any other is not worth saying. Now it is a knowledge of the
Syntax-" the putting together"-of a language that enables us to use it or understand it fully.
And-ask anybody that knows-there has not been a Syntax, that is a Syntax of the French
Language, in English before this work. It goes without saying, therefore, that it is the best now
before the public, as it is acknowledged to be by those who are supposed to know. This work
makes the written language its basis, and discusses the elements that enter into the construction
of the sentence. That in few words is all there is of it. But if you look into it, you will find
that it means far more than the few words seem to imply. One vol., 12mo, $2.50.

Fenno's Science and Art of Elocution stands in the very front rank of works
on this subject, though it took teachers a little time to find this out. All good things progress
slowly. First it treats of the Science of Elocution, investigating in simple language the elements
that enter into good speaking. Then it takes up the Art. For there is a knowing how to speak,
and a doing the speaking as it ought to be done. These are two altogether different things often
not sufficiently kept sight of. One vol., 12mo, $1.25.

Knoflach's German Manual is a treatise on the elements of the German language,
for beginners. It treats of the Conjugations, Declensions, and the arrangement of words, with
a great deal more than one would expect in such a work. One vol., 12mo, $1.

Reily's Artist and His Mission is an inquiry into the faculties of the mind that
enter into the representation of beauty by the artist, be he painter or poet. It is a book for ad-
vanced pupils, who can do some thinking. One vol., 12mo,

The Literary News

Owes its new dress to its growing popularity, and this to its faithful fulfilment of its programme. This is to present a survey of the new books in a manner that, at an hour's reading, enables any one to make a discriminate selection of books for himself or his friends, or to converse intelligently on the literary topics of the day. This is done by devoting its space to good books only; by wasting none on poor ones; by quoting only from recognized authorities; by selecting with an aim not merely to guide by a praise of books," but by awakening an interest in their contents, in their relation to literature, and last, not least, in their authors. This personal element, indeed, makes the LITERARY NEWS So genial and readable. If in its endeavors to promote Good Home Reading it must confess to an inclination for appreciative commendation rather than disparaging criticism, it springs from the conviction, which is the foundation of the LITERARY NEWS, that home reading cannot be too warmly encouraged, that too much is better than too little, that the time spent on reading, the money spent on the purchase of books, must finally prove a good investment, even should one occasionally err in choice and judgment and pay too high a price for a book which happens to be "the fashion."

Therefore the very object of the LITERARY NEWs makes it, pre-eminently, a "bookselling" paper, and booksellers, either by using its imprint editions or by obtaining individual subscriptions, not only serve the interests of good literature, but, at the same time, their own.
