THIS month was named by Numa Pompilius, the second king of the Romans, about 700 years before Christ, after Janus, one of their heathen gods, said to be door-keeper of heaven, and god of peace. They represented him with two faces, one of which was old and wrinkled, and the other young and fresh-looking; and therefore the name of January was given to the first month in the year, because with one face Janus seemed to be looking back to the old year, and with the other looking forward to the new one.
