PREFACE.

IN preparing the text of this edition I have availed myself of the invaluable apparatus criticus in Professor Schoell's edition of the play (Leipzig, 1887), as well as of the collation of V which he has included in his preface to the Casina (1890). From these two sources I have compiled the short notes of мs. readings which are given at the foot of each page of the text; they include, I think, all the important variations, and will at any rate enable the student to see at once whether any particular reading in the text has Ms. authority or not; further than this it is in my opinion inadvisable to go, in a book intended primarily in usum scholarum. The insertion of English stage directions in the text is intended to avoid the necessity for longer explanations in the notes and to bring the scene more vividly before the minds of younger students.

In the Introduction I have devoted considerable space to an account of Plautine metre and prosody, in which I have tried to emphasize the fact—not generally realized, at any rate by young studentsthat the versification of Plautus is not a thing apart, either in its rules or its irregularities. The notes on scansion, which I have added at the foot of each page of text, will I hope serve a double purpose;
