SEE the destin'd day arise; See a willing Sacrifice; Jesus, to redeem our loss, Hangs upon the shameful Cross.
Jesu! who but Thou had borne, Lifted on that tree of scorn, Every pang and bitter throe, Finishing Thy life of woe?
Who but Thou had dared to drain, Fill'd with gall, the cup of pain; And with tender body bear
Thorns, and nails, and piercing spear.
Thence the cleansing Water flow'd Mingled from Thy Side with Blood, Sign to man's attesting eyes Of the finish'd sacrifice.
Holy Jesu! grant us grace, In that Sacrifice to place All our trust in toil and strife, All our hopes of endless life.
THY trial o'er, and now beneath Thine own Cross faintly bending, True Isaac, Thou the hill of death Art wearily ascending.
Thy hands and feet with nails pierc'd thro', Upon the Cross they raise Thee;
Where even now in distant view, The eye of faith surveys Thee.
O wondrous love that God most High For man was pleas'd to cherish! His sinless Son He gave to die, That sinners might not perish.
Thy Cross, O Jesu, breaks the rod And chain of condemnation,
And makes a league 'twixt man and God, For our entire salvation.
O praise the Father, praise the Son, The Lamb for sinners given,
And Holy Ghost, thro' Whom alone Our souls are meet for heaven.
THE royal banner is unfurl'd,
And lo! the Cross is rear'd on high, On which the Savior of the world Is stretch'd in cruel agony.
Pierc'd by the spear, He yielded forth Water and Blood a mingled tide, That so a fount of priceless worth Might flow for sinners from His Side. Then were the wonders plainly shown, Which saints of old rejoic'd to sing, How of a tree He made a throne,
Whereon He reign'd a gracious King.
Lord, in Thy Cross may we discern Our only hope, our path to heaven; And Oh! to Thee may sinners turn With longing eyes to be forgiven.
Now my soul, thy voice upraising, Sing aloud in mournful strain Of the sorrows most amazing, And the agonizing pain,
Which our Savior
Sinless bore, for sinners slain.
He, the cruel scourge enduring, Ransom for our sins to pay, By His stripes transgressors curing, Raising those who wounded lay, Bore our sorrows,
And remov'd our pains away.
He to freedom hath restor❜d us, By the very bonds He bare, Crucified, His wounds afford us Each a stream of mercy rare; And He draws us
To His Cross, and keeps us there.
When His painful life was ended, And the spear transfix'd His side; Blood and Water thence descended, Pouring forth a double tide:
This to cleanse us,
That to heal us is applied.
Jesu, may Thy promis'd blessing Comfort to our souls afford, May we, now Thy love possessing, And at length our full reward, Ever praise Thee,
As our ever glorious Lord.
ALL is o'er, the pain, the sorrow, Human taunts and Satan's spite; Death shall be despoil'd to-morrow Of the Prey he holds to night; Now awhile, His own to save, Christ must sleep within the grave.
Fierce and deadly was the anguish On the bitter Cross He bore; How did soul and body languish, Till the toil of death was o'er! But that toil, so fierce and dread, Bruis'd and crush'd the serpent's head.
Let us now, with voice of sadness, Chant the anthem soft and low; Loftier strains of praise and gladness From to-morrow's harps will flow: 'Death and hell at length are slain, Christ hath triumph'd, Christ doth reign."
Lo! the glad morn is come; The Lord is risen indeed, Victorious from the tomb;
He hath His people freed. Thy praise we sing, the Church's Head, O Thou Who livest and wast dead.
All hail, triumphant Lord, Who hast our ransom paid! Wide be Thy Name ador❜d; On Thee our help is laid.
To Thee all power in earth and heaven, The keys of death and hell, are given.
Jesu, to us impart
Thy Resurrection's power; And teach each quicken'd heart To love Thee more and more;
Thou art the Life, our sins forgive; Speak but the word and we shall live.
To God the Father, Son,
And Spirit ever blest, Eternal Three in One,
All worship be addrest;
From first to last, of right ador'd, The One, most High, Eternal Lord.
LET us give thanks to God,
Who our Redeemer came;
And, rob'd in raiment white, draw near The banquet of the Lamb.
