Mr. Andrews; J. R. Drake's "Culprit Fay," one of the six short books of the Grolier Club's Printers' Series; the "Rita Lydig Collection," one of the many splendid catalogs which Mr. Gilliss produced; and Volume III of Stokes's "Iconography of Manhattan Island," with its splendid reproductions and painstaking composition. -Frederic Goudy's two beautiful books on lettering, "The Alphabet, 15 Interpretative Designs," and "Elements of Lettering" have been selected to represent him, together with "Three Essays by Augustine Birrell" in one of Mr. Goudy's types, being one of the books of the Grolier Club's Printers' Series, and two monumental folios: "A System of Architectural Ornament," and Doris Ulmann's "A Portrait Gallery of American Editors."

For Carl Purington Rollins we have "A Background to Architecture" by S. H. Rathbun, and "Prometheus" by Clarence W. Mendell, both Yale University Press books. There is also a large privately printed book with striking color reproductions: Leo Wiener's "Mayan and Mexican Origins." To these three 1926 books are added Stevenson's "A Lodging for the Night," one of the books of the Grolier Club's Printers' Series, and "Jean Ribaut, the Whole and True Discouerye of Terra Florida," containing a facsimile reprint of

the edition of 1563. The latter is just off the press.

Dard Hunter is represented by "Old Paper Making"; and "The Literature of Paper Making"; written by himself, printed by himself on paper of his own manufacture, in his private type, and bound by himself.

William A. Kittredge of the Lakeside Press, Chicago, has contributed the two volumes of the "Journal of a Voyage to North America"; the "History of the Chicago Literary Club"; "The Florentine Book Fair;" and "Shakespeare's

The California printers are well represented. Messrs. Nash, Grabhorn and Taylor all work in San Francisco. smaller facsimile of the first edition; and ten broadsides.

Edwin Grabhorn has lent "The Book of Job," and "The Sermon on the Mount" with their strikingly colored frontispieces; the little "Book of Ruth" with its colorful drawing and hand illuminated initials; "The Philobiblon" of Richard de Bury in 15th century guise; and "The Letter of Amerigo Vespucci," the only one of the five with a modern title-page.

For Henry H. Taylor we have the sizable "Documents Relating to New Neatherland"; "Thirty-five Sonnets" by George Sterling; a San Francisco Museum of Art exhibition catalog; a memorial book about John Irby; and Green's "Seventy Years in California"; together with lay-outs, photostats and proofs.

Frederic Warde has sent his books from Paris, and we have not learned just what were included.

Thomas Cleland is represented by a dainty book of verses, "Serenade" by Hugh Western; Arthur Machen's "Ornaments in Jade"; and a book in italics, Dunsany's "The Compromise of the King of the

Golden Isles," printed for the Grolier Club.

Percy Grassby sent a number of brochures, folders and broadsides, containing woodcuts printed in color, the largest item being the centenary publication of the New Bedford [Massachusetts] Institution for Savings.

Two books designed by W. A. Dwig gins have been lent: a little book on "Modern Color"; and the first edition of Willa Cather's "My Mortal Enemy," with drawings on variously colored backgrounds as chapter heads.

And "Nowel, Being Certain Presumably Elizabethan Verses with Pictures by Walter Dorwin Teague" represents that artist.

Joseph Pennell had a very active part in the British end of the Leipzig Exhibition in 1914; and Mrs. Pennell is very enthusiastic about the American representation this year. She has arranged for sending those big, lavishly illustrated tomes, "Pen Drawing and Pen Draughtsmen," "Etchers and Etching," "Our Philadelphia," and the "Adventures of an Illustrator," together

with several leaves of proofs for the latter. Ernest Peixotto's drawings are shown, illustrating "A Revolutionary Pilgrimage"; "Our Hispanic Southwest;" "Through Spain and Portugal;" and "The American Front."

Mrs. Elliott's drawings and designs are reproduced, partly in color, in "Tales from Shakespeare," published by the David McKay Company, 1922, and in a program for May Day at Bryn Mawr College, 1924. There are also nearly a dozen originals of drawings and designs reproduced.

Mrs. Ivins's delightful ink sketches and colored woodcuts of children are shown in "Many Children," "Night and Moonlight," C. C. Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas," Louis Untermeyer's "This Singing World," and Lamb's "Dream Children." A dummy for "This Singing World" has also been sent.

Allen Lewis's splendid woodcuts, initials and ornaments are really a part of the printed page in "Journeys to Bagdad" and particularly in "Short Stories by Walt Whitman," just issued by the Columbia University Press.

Equally intriguing are Wilfred Jones's partly colored woodcuts, appearing in "The Epic of Kings," Sterne's "Sentimental Journey," and "The Kasidah of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi." With Mr. Jones's books are included four lay-outs.,

The rollicking character of Mr. Wilson's lavish colored woodcuts is shown at its best in "Full and By," and "Iron Men and Wooden Ships." "The Miracle of Coral Gables," and "La Salle, a Companion Car to Cadillac" indicate the loving care that is given to our best advertising.

Vojtech Preissig is represented by "Syncopating Saxophones," the design of which certainly has the spirit of syncopation; "A Special Course in Etching and Block Printing" (being a handsome little folder); and a Lakeside Press brochure on Offset Lithography.

"Voyaging Southward from the Strait. of Magellan," and "Wilderness, a Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska," by Rockwell Kent, containing reproductions of his bleak drawings, represent this original artist.

Rudolph Ruzicka's inimitable wood engravings are shown in "New York,"

"Newark," and "Fountains of Papal

Rome."

The American showing includes nearly two hundred separate items. However well they may compare with the showings of the various countries in other respects, it is believed that they will compare very favorably indeed typographically.

The present Leipzig exhibition emphasizes books as objects of art more than did the 1914 exhibition. Whether or not it will be a greater exhibition than the former one (tragically ended by the war) remains to be seen. In any case the contemporary American book arts will be really represented at a Leipzig exhibit for the first time. The exhibition will remain open until September, and a large tourist attendance is expected.
