THE object of the editor in the following pointing of the Psalms and Canticles, has been to secure unanimous chanting by means of the simplest possible markings. The perpendicular lines indicate the bars of the ordinary Anglican chant; The accents mark the syllables on which stress is to be laid; And the pauses are indicated by the commas or semicolons of ordinary punctuation. It will be observed that a large number of stops, which occur in the ordinary version of the Psalms, have been omitted, as causing too frequent breaks in the recitation: while, on the other hand, in some instances, stops not grammatically necessary have been introduced to divide a recitation which has seemed too long to be easily made on one breath. In order to attain the smoothness and distinctness inseparable from good chanting, the following rules are suggested :— I. Every syllable to be distinctly pronounced. |
