L'AMOUR ET PSYCHÉ.

Pour bien comprendre ce tableau, il faut se rappeler l'histoire de Psyché, qui ressentit le bonheur que fait éprouver l'amour sans connaître celui qui occasionnait ses plaisirs. Il faut songer que l'Amour, que nous voyons si bien dans le tableau, est invisible pour Psyché; il faut par conséquent penser à l'étonnement que peut éprouver l'Ame en se trouvant occupée tout entière par un objet dont les sens ne peuvent lui laisser prendre aucune idée.

Lorsque M. Gérard exposa ce tableau au salon de l'an VII (1798), il y produisit beaucoup d'effet. Il a été gravé depuis par M. Jean Godefroy.

Le tableau a appartenu au général Rapp. 11 est maintenant dans la galerie du Luxembourg.

CUPID AND PSYCHE.

To understand this picture perfectly, we must call to mind the history of Psyche, who experienced the happiness that love produces, without knowing from whom its pleasures proceeded. We must imagine that Cupid in the picture, whom we see so plainly, is invisible to Psyche; and may then conceive the astonishment the soul may experience upon finding itself engrossed by an object of which the senses cannot give it any idea.

When this picture of M. Gerard appeared at the exhibition in the year vII (1798), it produced a powerful effect. An engraving has since been taken from it by M. Jean Godefroy. The picture belonged to general Rapp; but is now at the Luxembourg.
