1. MANY religious people, it is to be feared, are in the habit of thinking that courage and good personal bearing are not necessarily parts of religion; while very many, on the other hand, have so praised these attributes, as to impress us with the idea that they consider that the whole of a boy's religion consists in being bold and free. Both of these are mistakes, and nearly equally so. They are shown to be so in one and the selfsame story in Holy Scripture, that of Samuel's choice of David when he anointed him for the kingdom.
