Leaves setaceous, subtriquetrous, slightly channelled above, erect, smooth, shorter than the stem. Stem erect, slender, triquetrous, smooth. Spikes oblong. Bracteas ovate, mucronate. Glumes ovate, more or less acute, brown, with a green keel and white edges. Fruit when young erect, subsequently spreading nearly horizontally, longitudinally ribbed. Nut ovali-subrotund, compressed, obsoletely triquetrous, very minutely dotted.

Haughmond Hill; Stiperstones Hill. Boggy ground north of Bomere pool. Rood tufted, fibrous. Stem erect, slender, 6-10 inches high, angular, smooth, naked. Leaves all on the lower portion of the stem, smooth, setaceous or filiform, semicylindrical, channelled above, contracted above the middle into a long acuminated triangular scabrous point, shorter than the stem, sheathing and ribbed at the base. Spikes oblong. Bracteas none. Glumes as long and broad as and forced off by the redexed fruit. Fruit dark brown, shining, at first erect, finally reflexed. Perigynium with 2 strong marginal ribs, otherwise nerveless, the orifice slightly membranous entire and truncate bifid on one side only. Nut minutely dotted, about two-thirds as long as the perigynium, crowned by the long persistent style.

3. C. stellulata, Gooden. Little prickly Carex. Spikelets 3-4, sterile at their base, roundish, somewhat distant; fruit squarrosopatent; glumes broadly ovate, acute; perigynium nearly sessile, broadly ovate, attenuated, plano-convex, margins serrulate, orifice bifid; nut stipitate, ovate, obtuse, compressed. Root tufted. Herbage of a grass-green. Stem 6-9 inches high, triquetrous, edges nearly smooth. Leaves sheathing at the base, channelled above, linear, tapering into an acute triquetrous point, keels and edges rough. Spike erect, of 3-4 small roundish distant sessile few-flowered spikelets, lowermost subtended by a bractea which is frequently but by no means constantly elongated into a setaceous leaflet. Glumes membranous, greenish-brown. Perigynium 7-ribbed on the convex side, numerously obscurely striated on the plane one. Nut smooth, about half the length of the perigynium.

4. C. ovalis, Gooden. Oval-spiked Carex. Spikelets 3-6, sterile at the base, oval, approximate; fruit erect; glumes lanceolate, acute, as long as the fruit; perigynium ovato-acuminate, tapering at the base, compressed, plano-convex, striated, with a broad membranous margin, serrulate at the edges, orifice bifid; nut oval, compressed. Root creeping, scaly. Stem 1 foot high, triangular, smooth, roughish above. Leaves chiefly on the lower portion of the stem, deep-green, short, linear, acute, rough at the edges and midrib, with membranous sheaths at the base. Spikelets 3-6, alternate, crowded, erect, brownish-green, shining. Bracteas small, shorter than the spikelets, that of the lower one ovate membranous, the nerve extending into a rough mucro about as long as the bractea, those of the upper ones resembling the glumes, ovato-lanceolate, membranous at the edges with a green nerve. Glumes concealing the fruit, lanceolate or ovato-lanceolate, brownish, with a membranous margin and green nerve, as long and broad as the fruit. Perigynium obscurely ribbed or striated on the convex side, 5-ribbed at the base on the plane side. Nut smooth.

5. C. curta, Gooden. White Carex. Spikelets 5-6, alternate, approximate, elliptical, sterile at the base, lowermost slightly distant, bracteated; fruit erect; glumes ovate, cuspidate, shorter than the fruit; perigynium stipitate, ovate or subelliptical, acute, planoconvex, faintly striated, margins rough, orifice bifid; nut elliptical, tapering at the base, compressed. Bomere pool.

Root creeping. Stem 1 foot high, triangular, rough above. Leaves narrow, linear, acute, striated, rough at the edges and keels below the taper point. Spikelets of a short tumid elliptical shape and a pale silvery green hue, upper ones crowded, lowermost very slightly distant, subtended by a very short acute bractea. Glumes membranous and whitish with a green keel, lower ones suddenly cuspidate, upper ones broadly ovate acuminato-cuspidate. Nut smooth.
