HYMN 80.

PRAISE the Lord! ye heav'ns adore Him,
Praise Him, angels, in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before Him,
Praise Him, all ye stars and light.
Praise the Lord! for He hath spoken,
Worlds His mighty voice obey'd;
Laws which never shall be broken,
For their guidance hath He made.

2 Praise the Lord! for He is glorious,
Never shall His promise fail;
God hath made His saints victorious,
Sin and death will not prevail.
Praise the God of our Salvation;
Hosts on high, His pow'r proclaim;
Heav'n and earth, and all creation,
Laud and magnify His name.

HYMN 81.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and early rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.

3 Let all my converse be sincere,
My conscience as the noon-day clear;
For thine all-seeing eye surveys
My secret thoughts, my works and ways.

4 Direct, control, suggest this day, All I design, or do, or say;

1

2

That all my powers, with all their might,
In thy sole glory may unite.

HYMN 82.

TO Thee, O Lord, with dawning light
My thankful voice l'll raise,
Thy mighty power to celebrate,
Thy holy name to praise:

For Thou, in helpless hour of night,
Hast compassed my bed,

And now, refresh'd with peaceful sleep,
Thou liftest up my head.

Grant me, O God, Thy quick'ning grace,
Through this and every day;

That, guided and upheld by Thee,
My feet may never stray.
Increase my faith, increase my hope,
Increase my zeal and love;

And fix my heart's affections all
On Christ and things above.

3 And when, life's labours o'er, I sink To slumber in the grave,

1

In death's dark vale be Thou my trust,
To succour and to save!

That so through Him, who bled and died,
And rose again for me,

"The grave and gate of death" may prove
A passage home to Thee.

HYMN 83.

GLORY to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light,

Keep me, O keep me, King of Kings,
Beneath thine own almighty wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die that so I may
With joy behold the judgement day.

4 O may my soul on Thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more active make
To serve my God when I awake.

5 Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

HYMN 84.

1 WHEN the soft dews of kindly sleep,
My wearied eyelids gently steep;
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest,
For ever on my Saviour's breast.

2 Abide with me from morn to eve,
For without Thee I cannot live:
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

3 Sun of my soul! Thou Saviour dear, It is not night when Thou art near; Oh! may no earth-born cloud arise,

To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes.

4 Come near and bless us when we wake, Ere through the world our way we take, Till in the ocean of Thy love,

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

HYMN 85.

WELCOME, sweet day of rest!
That saw the Lord arise;
Welcome to this reviving breast,
And these rejoicing eyes.

2 The King himself comes near,
And feasts his saints to-day :

Here we may come, and see him here,
And love, and praise, and pray.

[blocks in formation]

3 One day amid the place

Where Jesu's love we taste,

Is sweeter than ten thousand days
In sinful pleasure past.

4 My willing soul would stay
In such a frame as this
For ever, till I'm call'd away
To everlasting bliss!

HYMN 86.

1 LORD, how delightful 'tis to see
A whole assembly worship Thee;
At once they sing, at once they pray,
They hear of heav'n and learn the way.

2 I have been there, and still would go, "Tis like a little heav'n below:

Not all the world and sin can say
Shall draw my thoughts, my heart away.

3 O write upon my mem'ry, Lord,
The texts and doctrines of thy word;
That I may break thy laws no more,
But love Thee better than before.

4 With thoughts of Christ and things divine,
Fill up this foolish heart of mine;
That, hoping pardon through his blood,
for ever dwell with God.
