The plates, some of which are colored lithographs, exhibit specimens of the various styles of architecture prevailing at different periods in France, from the thirteenth century down to the present day. The buildings of Paris are arranged under the heads of first and second class private residences, and lodging houses of the first, second, and third classes. The houses in the environs of Paris include villas of the first, second, and third classes, guard houses, &c. The work contains, moreover, useful details relating to the various classes of houses and their appurtenances, doors, halls, windows, dormer windows, chimneys, wainscots, &c. These series of different classes are followed by a comparison of the plans of houses belonging to each of the classes, drawn upon a small scale on a double sheet, showing at one view a great variety of styles and arrangements.

The Holy Chapel, that marvel of the middle ages, is remarkable for the harmony of its general appearance, the elegance of its form, and the variety and richness of its ornamentation. It is, moreover, one of those rare types which characterize an epoch. The work of one artist and the result of his sole inspiration. Messrs. Decloux and Doury, in supplying architects and painters with models of decorations, selected from this edifice in preference to all others, for the reason that its mural paintings, are admirable in every respect, and the chasteness of its style render it a masterpiece of Gothic art.
