A suggestion that some effort should be made by the London booksellers to relieve their poorer brethren in Paris, and their assistants, who had been reduced to poverty or distress by the siege, having met with some response, some gentlemen, upon their own responsibility, sent a considerable quantity of food to the care of Messrs. Hachette and Co., publishers, Paris, and in order fully to ascertain and carry into effect the wishes of the Trade, a meeting was called for February 6, at which Mr. Thomas Longman consented to preside, and the Stationers' Company lent their great hall for the purpose. Although the notice given was necessarily short, there was a good attendance, and the following resolutions were unanimously carried :

:

I. That the names and the amounts of subscription shall be taken in the room, and means adopted for collecting further subscriptions, the proceeds of which to be devoted to the relief of the assistants of Publishers, Booksellers, Music-sellers, and such other persons connected with literature as may be judged expedient by the Committee which will be formed in Paris for this object.

II. That Mr. MARSTON be requested to act as Secretary and to collect subscriptions, and that Mr. JOHN MILES be requested to act as Treasurer of the Funds collected at this Meeting and subsequently.

III. That this Meeting request Mr. BUTTERWORTH, Mr. F. CHAPMAN, Mr. CHAPPELL, Mr. GALPIN, Mr. HUDSON, Mr. W. KENT, Mr. THOMAS LONGMAN, Mr. SAMPSON Low, Mr. JOHN MILES, Mr. J. J. MILES, Mr. JOHN MURRAY, Mr. SOTHERAN, Mr. STANFORD, Mr. STEWART, Mr. TRUBNER, Mr. WHITAKER, to act as a Committee (of whom five shall form a quorum), with power to add to their number.

IV. That the funds collected shall not be disposed of without the consent of at least three members of the Committee.

V. That MM. DIDOT and MM. HACHETTE having been written to for advice on February 3, it would be desirable that the Committee should wait their reply before deciding on any distribution of the Funds.

VI. That should it appear to the Committee that there would be too much delay and impediment in a separate distribution of the funds, for the special purpose proposed, they should call a General Meeting of the subscribers to take their opinion as to paying the money over to the Lord Mayor's Fund.

A sum of more than £500 was subscribed in the room, and by the time the committee met this was considerably augmented. The committee were perplexed as to the best mode of procedure, as, although several letters had been written, no reply had been received from Paris, and it was not even known in what spirit the offer would be received by our friends there. Another meeting was held a week afterwards, and the committee were on that occasion favoured with the presence of M. Fouret, a member of the firm of Messrs. Hachette and Co., who stated, that at the time of his leaving Paris, a day or two before, the food dis patched ten days previously had not then arrived: he advised that a fresh supply should be sent. But the committee, fearing there might be some misadventure that would mar the intention of the donors, thought it best to send the sum of £500 in money, to be distributed at the discretion of the Paris committee. Not till March 1st had Mr. Marston, the indefatigable secretary, information that the whole of the goods consigned on the 4th | February had reached their destination. The letter conveying the news entered into full particulars of the mode of distribution adopted, the class of recipients, and the good feeling engendered by the efforts made on their behalf. To quote the words of the writers :-* "Permettez nous d'abord, Messieurs, de vous dire combien nous avons été personnellement touchés de la cordiale sympathie dont les éditeurs

M. Noblet, printer, secretary du Cercle de la Libraire, M. Piet de la Papeterie du Marais, M. Breton, and M. Fouret, of Messrs. Hachette's, who had been nominated by the council of administration to superintend the distribution.

They | then proceed to say that if the givers had been present at the first distribution, they would have been gratified to see the satisfaction of those who came to receive their portions, and that which contributed to increase their happiness was the nature and tout Anglaise of the articles distributed. On receipt of this gratifying intelligence, the committee again met, and it was resolved to send a further supply of food to the amount of £500, and that no time should be lost in forwarding it.

It was at the same time determined that the subscription should be kept open till the end of ¦ this month, so that those who wish to do so, may add their names to the list :
