seek him; even of those who seek made; he remembereth that we are thy face, O Jacob. but dust.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? It is the LORD strong and mighty, even the LORD mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up ye everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? Even the LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.

PSALM 103. Benedic, anima mea. PRAISE the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, praise his holy name.

Praise the LORD, O my soul; and forget not all his benefits;

Who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities;

Who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving kindness;

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, making thee young and lusty as an eagle.

The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment, for all them that are oppressed with wrong.

He showed his ways unto Moses, his works unto the children of Is rael.

The LORD is full of compassion and mercy, long-suffering, and of great goodness.

He will not alway be chiding; neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses.

For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth; so great is his mercy also toward those who fear him!

Look how wide also the east is from the west; so far hath he set our sins from us!

Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children; even so is the LORD merciful unto them that fear him.

The days of a man are but as grass; for he flourisheth as a flower of the field.

For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

But the merciful goodness of the LORD endureth for ever and ever upon those who fear him; and his righteousness upon children's children;

Even upon such as keep his covenant, and think upon his commandments to do them.

The LORD hath prepared his seat in heaven, and his kingdom ruleth over all.

O praise the LORD, ye Angels of his, ye that excel in strength; ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his words.

O praise the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye servants of his, that do his pleasure.

O speak good of the LORD, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion: Praise thou the LORD, O my soul.

SELECTION II.

FROM PSALM 139. Domine, probasti.

O LORD, thou hast searched me out, and known me; thou knowest my down-sitting, and mine up-rising; thou understandest my thoughts long before.

Thou art about my path, and about my bed, and spiest out all my ways. For lo, there is not a word in my tongue, but thou, O LORD, knowest it altogether.

Thou hast fashioned me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful and excellent for me; I cannot attain unto it.

Whither shall I go then from thy Spirit? or whither shall I go then from thy presence?

If I climb up into heaven, thou art there; if I go down to hell, thou art

For he knoweth whereof we are there also.

If I take the wings of the morning, worship, thy glory, thy praise, and and remain in the uttermost parts of wondrous works; the sea;

Even there also shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold

me.

If I say, Peradventure the darkness shall cover me; then shall my night be turned to day.

Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee, but the night is as clear as the day; the darkness and light to thee are both alike.

For my reins are thine; thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks unto thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well..

So that men shall speak of the might of thy marvellous acts; and I will also tell of thy greatness.

The memorial of thine abundant kindness shall be showed, and men shall sing of thy righteousness.

The LORD is gracious and merciful; long-suffering, and of great goodness.

The LORD is loving unto every man, and his mercy is over all his works.

All thy works praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints give thanks unto thee. They show the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

That thy power, thy glory, and mightiness of thy kingdom, might known unto men.

My bones are not hid from thee, though I be made secretly, and fash-be ioned beneath in the earth.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being imperfect; and in thy book were all my members written.

Which day by day were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How dear are thy counsels unto me, O GOD; O how great is the sum of them!

If I tell them, they are more in number than the sand; when I wake up, I am present with thee.

Try me, O GOD, and seek the ground of my heart; prove me, and examine my thoughts.

Look well if there be any way of wickedness in me; and lead me in the way everlasting.

PSALM 145. Exaltabo te, Deus. I WILL magnify thee, O GOD, my King, and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

Every day will I give thanks unto thee, and praise thy name for ever

and ever.

Great is the LORD, and marvellous, worthy to be praised; there is no end of his greatness.

One generation shall praise thy works unto another, and declare thy power.

Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all ages.

The LORD upholdeth all such as fall, and lifteth up all those who are down.

The eyes of all wait upon thee, O LORD, and thou givest them their meat in due season.

Thou openest thine hand, and fillest all things living with plenteousness. The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him; yea, all such as call upon him faithfully.

He will fulfil the desire of those who fear him; he also will hear their cry, and will help them.

The LORD preserveth all those who love him; but scattereth abroad all the ungodly.

My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let all flesh give thanks unto his holy name for ever

and ever.

[blocks in formation]

HAVE mercy upon me, O GOD,

As for me, I will be talking of thy lafter thy great goodness; according

to the multitude of thy mercies, do even for the living GOD: when shall away mine offences. I come to appear before the presence Wash me thoroughly from my of GOD? wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin:

For I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me.

My tears have been my meat day and night; while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy GOD?

Now when I think thereupon, I pour out my heart by myself; for I went with the multitude, and brought them forth into the house of Gop,

Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight, that thou mightest be justified in thy say. ing, and clear when thou art judged. In the voice of praise and thanks. Behold, I was shapen in wicked-giving, among such as keep holyday. ness, and in sin hath my mother conceived me.

But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts, and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.

Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness, that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Turn thy face from my sins, and put out all my misdeeds.

Make me a clean heart, O GOD, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy Spirit

from me.

O give me the comfort of thy help again, and stablish me with thy free Spirit.

Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked, and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O GOD, thou that art the GoD of my health, and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness.

Thou shalt open my lips, O LORD, and my mouth shall show thy praise. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee; but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings.

The sacrifice of GOD, is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, Ó GOD, shalt thou not despise. FROM PSALM 42. Quemadmodum.

LIKE as the hart desireth, the water-brooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O GOD.

My soul is athirst for GOD, yea,

Why art thou so full of heaviness, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me?

Put thy trust in GoD; for I will yet give him thanks for the help of his countenance.

The LORD hath granted his lovingkindness in the day-time; and in the night-season did I sing of him, and made my prayer unto the GOD of my

life.

will say unto the GOD of my strength, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I thus heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?

Namely, while they say daily unto me, Where is now thy God?

Why art thou so vexed, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me?

O put thy trust in GoD; for I will yet thank him, who is the help of my countenance and my GOD.

SELECTION IV.

PSALM 37. Noli æmulari. FRET not thyself because of the ungodly; neither be thou envious against the evil doers:

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and be withered even as the green herb.

Put thou thy trust in the LORD, and be doing good; dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

shall give thee thy heart's desire. Delight thou in the LORD, and he

Commit thy way unto the LORD, and put thy trust in him, and he shall bring it to pass.

He shall make thy righteousness

as clear as the light; and thy just dealing as the noon-day.

Hold thee still in the LORD, and abide patiently upon him; but grieve not thyself at him whose way doth prosper, against the man that doeth after evil counsels.

Leave off from wrath, and let go displeasure; fret not thyself, else shalt thou be moved to do evil.

Wicked doers shall be rooted out; and they that patiently abide the LORD, those shall inherit the land.

Yet a little while, and the ungodly shall be clean gone; thou shalt look after his place, and he shall be away. But the meek-spirited shall possess the earth, and shall be refreshed in the multitude of peace.

The ungodly seeketh counsel against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

The LORD shall laugh him to scorn; for he hath seen that his day is coming.

The ungodly have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as are of a right conversation.

Their sword shall go through their own heart, and their bow shall

be broken.

A small thing that the righteous hath, is better than great riches of the ungodly;

For the arms of the ungodly shall be broken, and the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

The LORD knoweth the days of the godly; and their inheritance shall endure for ever.

They shall not be confounded in the perilous time; and in the days of dearth they shall have enough.

As for the ungodly, they shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall consume as the fat of lambs; yea, even as the smoke shall they consume away.

possess the land; and they that are cursed of him, shall be rooted out.

The LORD ordereth a good man's going, and maketh his ways acceptable to himself.

Though he fall, he shall not be cast away; for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

I have been young, and now am old, and yet saw I never the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging their bread.

The righteous is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

Flee from evil, and do the thing that is good, and dwell for evermore.

For the LORD loveth the thing that is right; he forsaketh not his that be godly, but they are preserved for ever.

The unrighteous shall be punished; as for the seed of the ungodly, it shall be rooted out.

The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

The mouth of the righteous is exercised in wisdom, and his tongue will be talking of judgment.

The law of his GOD is in his' heart, and his goings shall not slide. The ungodly seeth the righteous, and seeketh occasion to slay him.

The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

Hope thou in the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall promote thee, that thou shalt possess the land: when the ungodly shall perish, thou shalt see it.

I myself have seen the ungodly in great power, and flourishing like a green bay-tree.

I went by, and lo, he was gone: I sought him, but his place could nowhere be found.

Keep innocency, and take heed unto the thing that is right; for that shall bring a man peace at the last.

As for the transgressors, they shall The ungodly borroweth, and pay-perish together: and the end of the eth not again; but the righteous is ungodly is, they shall be rooted out merciful and liberal.

Such as are blessed of GOD, shall

But the salvation of the righteous

cometh of the LORD, who is also He that sweareth unto his neightheir strength in the time of trouble. bor, and disappointeth him not, And the LORD shall stand by though it were to his own hindrance them, and save them; he shall deliver them from the ungodly, and shall save them, because they put their trust in him.

SELECTION V.

He that hath not given his money upon usury, nor taken reward against the innocent:

Whoso doeth these things, shall never fall.

PSALM 91. Qui habitat. WHOSO dwelleth under the de fence of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say unto the LORD, Thou

PSALM 1. Beatus vir, qui non abiit BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sin-art my hope, and my strong hold; ners, and hath not sat in the seat of my GOD, in him will I trust. the scornful:

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law will he exercise himself day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side, that will bring forth his fruit in due season.

His leaf also shall not wither; and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.

As for the ungodly, it is not so with them, but they are like the chaff which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth.

Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgment, neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

But the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous; and the way of the ungodly shall perish.

PSALM 15. Domine, quis habitabit.

LORD, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? or who shall rest upon thy holy hill?

Even he that leadeth an uncorrupt life, and doeth the thing which is right, and speaketh the truth from his heart:

He that hath used no deceit in his tongue, nor done evil to his neighbor, and hath not slandered his neigh

bor:

For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers; his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day.

A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou. behold, and see the reward of the ungodly.

For thou, LORD, art my hope; thou hast set thine house of defence very high.

There shall no evil happen unto thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

They shall bear thee in their hands; that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread under thy feet. He that setteth not by himself, Because he hath set his love upon but is lowly in his own eyes, and me, therefore will I deliver him; I maketh much of them that fear the will set him up, because he hath LORD:
