is, no doubt, of the laft importance, that people fhould be convinced, and made thoroughly fenfible of their impotence and helplesness in themselves, and their entire dependence on divine grace, for falvation. So long as finners think they can recommend themselves to the favour of God, by their own. righteoufnefs, they will never "come unto Chrift, that they might have life." For " the whole have no need "of the phyfician, but they that are fick." And fo long as perfons imagine they labour under no infuperable inability, as to complying with the gospel, they will never feel their dependence on him, who alone is able to work in them, the whole good pleasure of his goodness, and A 2
