THE MORNING HYMN.

AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.
2 Redeem thy misspent moments past,
And live this day as if the last;
Thy talents to improve take care;
For the great day thyself prepare.
3 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Disperse my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

4 Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,

That all my powers, with all their might,
In thy sole glory may unite.

5 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
THE EVENING HYMN.

GL

LORY to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, oh, keep me, King of kings,
Beneath thine own almighty wings!
2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done :
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
To die, that this vile body may
Rise glorious at the awful day.
4 Oh, may my soul on Thee repose!
And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more active make,
To serve my God when I awake.

1 A CHARGE to keep we have,
A God to glorify;

S. Our never-dying souls to save,
And fit them for the sky;
To serve the present age,
Our calling to fulfil ;-

Oh, may it all our powers engage

To do our Master's will!

Arm us with jealous care,

As in thy sight to live;

And oh, thy servants, Lord, prepare
A strict account to give!

Help us to watch and pray,

And on Thyself rely;

Assured, if we our trust betray,
We shall for ever die.

ALMIGHTY God, in humble prayer

To Thee our souls we lift,

Do Thou our waiting minds prepare
For thy most needful gift.

2 We ask not golden streams of wealth.
Along our path to flow;

We ask not undecaying health,

Nor length of years below.

3 We ask not honours which an hour
May bring and take away;

We ask not pleasure, pomp, and power,
Lest we should go astray.

4. We ask for wisdom :-Lord, impart
The knowledge how to live;
A wise and understanding heart
To all before Thee give.

ALMIGHTY GOD! thy word is cast

Like seed into the ground;

Now let the dew of heaven descend,
And righteous fruits abound.

2 Let not the foe of Christ and man
This holy seed remove;
But give it root in every heart,
To bring forth fruits of love.
3 Let not the world's deceitful cares
The rising plant destroy;
But let it yield a hundredfold
The fruits of peace and joy.

4 Oft as the precious seed is sown,
Thy quick'ning grace bestow;
That all, whose souls the truth receive,
Its saving power may know.

4 AN
AND now, my soul, another year

Of my short life is past;
C. I cannot long continue here,
And this may be my last.

2 Much of my dubious life is gone,
Nor will return again;

And swift my passing moments run,
The few that do remain.

3 Awake, my soul; with utmost care.
Thy true condition learn:

What are thy hopes, how sure, how fair?
And what thy great concern?

4 Now a new scene of time begins,
Set out afresh for heaven;
Seek pardon for thy former sins,
In Christ so freely given.

5 ANGELS from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth;

P. Ye, who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship,

Worship Christ, the new-born King.

2 Shepherds in the field abiding,
Watching o'er your flock by night,
God with man is now residing;
Yonder shines the infant light:
Come, &c.

3 Saints before the altar bending,
Waiting long with hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In his temple shall appear:
Come, &c.

4 Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations,
Ye have seen his natal star:
Come, &c.

5 Sinners, wrung with true repentance,
Doomed for guilt to endless pains,
Justice now repeals the sentence,
Mercy calls you-break your chains:
Come, &c.

6 ANOTHER six days' work is done,

sabbath is begun; L. Return, my soul, enjoy thy rest, Improve the day thy God hath blest.

2 Oh, that our thoughts and thanks may rise, As grateful incense to the skies!

And draw from heaven that sweet repose
Which none but he that feels it knows.

3 This heavenly calm within the breast
Is the dear pledge of glorious rest,
Which for the church of God remains,
The end of cares, the end of pains.
4 With joy, great God, thy works we view,
In various scenes, both old and new ;
With praise we think on mercies past,
With hope we future pleasures taste.
