2 See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!
You who long for his appearing,

Then shall say, "This God is mine!"

Gracious Saviour!

Own me in that day for thine!
3 At his call the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the powers of nature, shaken
By his looks, prepare to flee :
Careless sinner!

What will then become of thee?

27 FAR from these narrow scenes of night

C.

Unbounded glories rise:

And realms of infinite delight,
Unknown to mortal eyes.

2 Fair, distant land! could mortal eyes
But half its charms explore,

How would our spirits long to rise,
And dwell on earth no more!

3 No cloud those blissful regions know,
For ever bright and fair!

For sin, the source of mortal woe,
Can never enter there.

4 Prepare us, Lord, by grace divine,
For thy bright courts on high:
Then bid our spirits rise and join
The chorus of the sky.

28 FATHER, again in Jesu's name we meet,

And bow in penitence beneath thy feet; 10s. Again to Thee our feeble voices raise, To sue for mercy, and to sing thy praise. 2 Oh! we would bless Thee for thy ceaseless care, And all thy work from day to day declare: Is not our life with hourly mercies crown'd? Does not thine arm encircle us around?

L.

3 Alas! unworthy of thy boundless love,
Too oft our feet from Thee, our Father, rove;
But now encouraged by thy voice, we come,
Returning sinners to a Father's home.

4 Oh! by that name in whom all fulness dwells!
Oh! by that love which every love excels!
Oh! by that blood so freely shed for sin!
Open blest mercy's gate, and take us in.

29 FATHER of heaven, whose love profound
A ransom for our souls hath found,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy pard'ning love extend.
2 Almighty Son, Incarnate Word,
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy saving grace extend.
3 Eternal Spirit, by whose breath
The soul is raised from sin and death,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy quick'ning power extend.
4 Jehovah, Father, Spirit, Son,
Mysterious Godhead! Three in One!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
Grace, pardon, life, to us extend.

30 FATHER of mercies, bow thine ear,

L.

Attentive to our earnest prayer;
We plead for those who plead for Thee;
Successful pleaders may they be!

2 Clothe Thou with energy divine

Their words, and let those words be thine;
To them thy sacred truth reveal,
Dispel their fear, inflame their zeal.

3 Teach them to sow the heavenly seed,
Teach them thy chosen flock to feed;
Teach them immortal souls to gain,
And save from everlasting pain.

4 Let list'ning multitudes around
Hear from their lips the joyful sound;
In humble strains thy grace implore,
And feel thy Spirit's quick'ning power.
5 Let sinners break their iron chains,
And sorrowing hearts forget their pains:
Let light through distant realms be spread,
And Zion rear her drooping head.

31 FATHER of mercies in thy word

C.

What endless glory shines!

For ever be thy name adored,
For these celestial lines.

2 Here may the wretched sons of want
Exhaustless riches find;

Riches, above what earth can grant,
And lasting as the mind.

3 Oh, may these heavenly pages be
My ever dear delight;

And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light!

4 Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,
Be Thou for ever near!

Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

32 FATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss

C.

Thy sov'reign will denies,

Accepted at thy throne of grace
Let this petition rise:

2 Give me a calm, a thankful heart,
From every murmur free ;

The blessings of thy grace impart,
And make me live to Thee.

3 Let the sweet hope that Thou art mine,
My life and death attend,

Thy presence through my journey shine,
And crown my journey's end.

ORTH in thy name, O Lord, I go,
My daily labour to pursue;
Thee, only Thee, resolved to know,
In all I think, or speak, or do.
2 The task thy wisdom hath assign'd,"
Oh, let me cheerfully fulfil!
In all my works thy presence find,
And prove thy acceptable will.
3 Thee may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost substance see;
And labour on at thy command,
And offer all my works to Thee.
4 Give me to bear thy easy yoke,

And every moment watch and pray;
And still to things eternal look,
And hasten to thy glorious day.

5 For Thee delightfully employ

Whate'er thy bounteous grace hath given; And run my course with even joy,

And closely walk with Thee to heaven.

34 FOUNTAIN of mercy! God of love!

C.

How rich thy bounties are!

The rolling seasons, as they move,
Proclaim thy constant care.

2 When in the bosom of the earth
The sower hid the grain,

Thy goodness mark'd its secret birth,
And sent the early rain.

3 The spring's sweet influence, Lord, was thine,
The plants in beauty grew;

Thou gav'st the summer's suns to shine,
The mild refreshing dew.

4 These various mercies from above
Matured the swelling grain ;

A kindly harvest crowns thy love,
And plenty fills the plain.

5 We own and bless thy gracious sway;
Thy hand all nature hails;
Seed-time nor harvest, night nor day,
Summer nor winter, fails.

35 FROM

L.

ROM all that dwell below the skies,
Let the Creator's praise arise;

Let the Redeemer's name be sung
Through every land, by every tongue.
2 Eternal are thy mercies, Lord,

Eternal truth attends thy word;

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.

36 FROM Greenland's icy mountains,

From India's coral strand, 7.6. Where Afric's sunny fountains Roll down their golden sand: From many an ancient river, From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

2 What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle ;
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile

;

In vain, with lavish kindness,*
The gifts of God are strewn ;
The heathen in their blindness,

Bow down to wood and stone.
3 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
By wisdom from on high-
Shall we to man benighted,
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation, oh, salvation!
The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation
Has learnt Messiah's name.
