* It may here be questioned, why they repeated the noun land, as they might have said the land which we passed through to search it, is exceeding good; and therefore might have omitted it the second time, To which it may be answered, that the business of the spies was two-fold-first, to see whether the land itself was good ; second, whether the inhabitants thereof were strong or weak. But they made an evil report of both : for as to the land they observed, chap. xiii. ver. 32. "A land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof." And, as to the inhabitants, they observed, verse 28. “ Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land." Therefore Joshua and Caleb answered both these objections, for first they observed, “ The land which we passed through to search it is exceeding good.” And, as to the people, they observed, verse 9. “Only rebel not ye against “the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land : for they are bread for us, &c.—the Lord is with "us, fear them not."

Heb. Shadow. The Hebrew expression is, “ I will dispossess them,” which I think here means" To extirpale them.” || This means, their total destruction. 80

* This means, by the south of the land of Canaan. But the English translator rendereth this expression contrary to the fact; for, they were to go up northward, and not southward, as appeareth by ver. 22.

* It is worthy of remark that it first makes use of the plural, to Moses and to Aaron, &c. and afterwards of the singular, " And they told him,"—which is explained as follows, tbat at first they shewed all of them the fruit of the land; but as to the answer, that they delivered to Moses himself, as he was the only person that sent them.
