"Report on the Pumice Stone Industry of the Lipari Islands. London, 1895. 8vo, paper covers as issued. $37.50.

'First edition, with the autography of the author on the front cover. This is an official publication of the Foreign Office, number 378. The note from the British Ambassador in Rome to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs (the late Marquis of Salisbury) reads: 'Rome, July 12, 1895. My Lord, I have the honour to transmit to your Lordship an interesting Report on the Pumice Stone Industry in the Lipari Islands, which has been furnished to me by Mr. Norman Douglass (sic), Third Secretary at Her Majesty's Embassy at St. Petersburg, who has been lately travelling in this country.'

Paul Elder's (San Francisco) latest catalog contains a heading "The Most Noted of All Books Relating to California." The listing is as follows:

'Father Serra and Palou were among the earliest of the Catholic missionaries sent to California; they established the first missions in that country which had a great influence upon the natives, and brought most of the tribes under their control. The letters from Father Serra to Father Palou, which chiefly t make up the volumes, give not only an account of the founding of the missions but interesting details of the various Indian tribes, their manners and customs, together with descriptions of the country.'
