Old Book Notes A letter from Stephen Hunt, Bookseller, 15b, Church Road, Southborough, Nr. Tunbridge Wells, England. 13th Dec., 1926. "To the Editor, Publishers' Weekly: I have just had the pleasure of a visit from a distinguished New York bookseller who is on a buying tour in this country. He told me that the prices of London booksellers were so high that he was turning to those in the country, the smaller fry, of whom I am one, more with a view to future business than immediate purchases. His remarks referred in especial to Americana and he said that the country bookseller supplied London and London expected to make too large profit in supplying New York. Now the country bookseller would every bit as soon supply America direct, at reasonable prices, if only he could get his money anything like as soon as he gets it from the London bookseller. Many of the best London houses pay cash on receipt of goods; hardly any of them keep the country bookseller more than one month. But the very soonest he receives remittance from America is two months after posting his catalog or report; more often it is three months and not infrequently five. The country bookseller cannot stand this in these days of intense competition, when country sales are so well attended by London buyers; therefore he sells to London. It is an incontrovertible fact that if the New Yorker wants the right books at the right prices from the English country dealer he must pay cash on receipt of goods; or better still, in cases where he |
