OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"Into good hands has fallen the task we hoped to see performed. Mr. Shillinglaw is well qualified for it, and has produced a volume which does credit to his industry and talent, and which is deserving of extended popularity."-Literary Gazette.

"The volume before us has rendered a chaotic mass of valuable abstract details into consecutive consistence, and is one of the most desirable compilations of Arctic research that has yet appeared, and may be truly called the focus of Arctic history.-United Service Gazette.

"We can cordially recommend this particularly welcome volume."Critic.

"A more opportune publication than this very valuable book could hardly issue from the press. Students of geographical discoveries, resulting from most dangerous and laborious land and maritime expeditions, are earnestly advised to consult this excellent digest of 'Arctic Discovery," "-Observer.

"Mr. Shillinglaw has placed all the information that can be possibly desired by the general reader in a very pleasing and accessible form, and his volume is at once opportune and satisfactory."-Colburn's New Monthly.

"Will be welcomed by the public as affording information which, till its publication, was only obtainable by wading through the ponderous folios of Purchas and Hakluyt, and balancing the conflicting statements of the old narrators."- Weekly News.

"Will be eagerly enquired after, and, we should think, taken out in large numbers by the searching expeditions, to be conned over.-Bell's Messenger.

"A well-timed publication, decorated with an excellent likeness of Sir John Franklin."-Nautical Standard.

"A most useful and interesting volume."-Britannia.

"A book for the day."--Globe.

"Mr. Shillinglaw's peculiarly acceptable work is well executed, and displays a competent knowledge of the subject.”—Bristol Mercury.

"The style of the narrative is pleasing, the chief facts are placed in prominent positions, and there is nothing done in the book-making line to swell out the volume."-Leeds Intelligencer.

"An exceedingly interesting volume."-Reading Mercury.

“A comprehensive and well written book.”—Edinburgh Courant. "We cordially recommend Mr. Shillinglaw's book to the attention of all who wish for information on its deeply interesting subject."— Aberdeen Herald.

"A useful and carefully compiled work of reference." Scotsman.

"This work is of special interest for North Germany, where the people are well acquainted with the Arctic seas. The book is dedicated to Lady Franklin, and deserves a German translation."-Norddeutche Freie Presse.
