HISTORICAL.

Note. "The State of Tennessee is within the limits of the territory granted by Queen Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh, and of the subsequent land grants made by Charles II to the lords proprietors of Carolina. As it became settled it was recognized as a portion of North Carolina." (U. S. Charters and Constitutions.)

1769-72. Watauga association consisting of immigrants from North Carolina and Virginia. ("Founders of Tennessee.”)

1776. Territory represented in colonial assembly of North Carolina. Officially called "District of Washington."

1777. District of Washington became Washington County, North Carolina, embracing whole of present state of Tennessee.

1784. State of Frankland (sometimes Franklin) formed with John Sevier, Governor.

1788. State of Frankland dissolved and jurisdiction of North Carolina re-established.

1790. Cession by North Carolina to the Federal Government of territory now Tennessee.

1790. Act of Congress creating territory under title "Territory of the United States south of the river, Ohio." Approved May 26, 1790.

1796. June 1, Tennessee admitted to Union.

1797. First General Assembly met at Knoxville.
