NORTHWEST TERRITORY.

HISTORICAL.

1787. Name given by Congress to the territory "northwest of the River Ohio." The territory included western lands, claims to which were ceded to the United States by New York (1780), Virginia (1784), Massachusetts (1785), Connecticut (1786). "Maxwell's Code," Cincinnati, 1796.

1784-1801. Cession of western lands by Virginia, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts to United States.

"West

ern Reserve," the name given by Connecticut to lands reserved from grant to U. S. which were finally ceded to U. S., May 30, 1801. "Virginia Military Lands," the name given by Virginia to bounty lands reserved from grant to United States.
