HISTORICAL.

1606. Territory included in grant to Plymouth Company (no settlement followed immediately).

1609, 1614. Discoveries by Henry Hudson and Adrian Block (Blok), and establishment of trading posts by the Dutch.

1636. First permanent settlement by English from Massachusetts at Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor.

1637. First General Court met May 1st.

1638. First constitution of Connecticut (the first written constitution in America) adopted at a convention held at Hartford, Jan. 14. 1638. New Haven Colony established.

1662. Charter of Connecticut granted by Charles II to John Winthrop and others, uniting the two colonies.

1686-89. Usurpation of Andros.

1689. Government under charter resumed. Charter recognized by William and Mary.

1774. Delegates sent to Continental Congress.

1788. United States constitution ratified January 9.

1873. Hartford made sole capital of State.

CHARTER.

Charter of Connecticut (1662), by Charles II to John Winthrop, John Mason, Samuel Wyllys and others, covering colony of Connecticut. Dated Apr. 23, 1662. [Contained in U. S. Charters and Constitutions, Part I, p. 252, where it is said:"the colonies of Hartford and New Haven had continued separate until they accepted this charter from King Charles, Apr. 20, 1665. An attempt was made in 1687 to repeal this charter, but the colonists refused to surrender it, and after the accession of William and Mary, in 1689, it was again recognized."]

Albert Carlos Bates in "Connecticut Statute Laws" shows folio copy of the charter printed and sold by Timothy Green at New London, 1718. (1 leaf +1-6 p.) Another folio copy of charter is bound in copy of Acts and Laws of 1715.

A copy of the charter is prefixed to the Acts and Laws of 1750 and to the Acts and Laws of 1769. Another copy of the charter with a sketch of the circumstances, etc., which led to its grant, and the attempt to secure its surrender, will be found in "Statutes, Compilations," etc., post.

In Albert Carlos Bates' 'Connecticut Statute Laws,' concerning this edition, it is said:- - "This edition of 1540 copies consists of a reprint of the revision of 1702, extending to p. 119, followed by a reprint of the laws passed at subsequent sessions pp. 120-210. Copies of this edition frequently lack the original table at the end of the volume and have bound in following the title, the charter and table printed in 1729."
