CONDITIONS OF BURSARIES OPEN TO 1. BRUCE. Founded in 1795, by the Rev. George Bruce, M.A., King's College, 1724, Minister, Dunbar. The Bursaries under this Foundation are now conjoined with the Fraser Bursary to form the Bruce and Fraser Scholarship (q.v.). 2. WILLIAM CATTO, BANKER'S BURSARY. This Bursary may be held in the Faculty of Divinity. For conditions see Bursaries in Arts. (A) Brown Scholar. 3. REV. DR. CORBET'S BURSARIES. Founded in 1876, by Rev. Adam Corbet, M.A., Mar. Coll., 1816; D.D., 1864, Minister of Drumoak. By his Deed of Settlement he bequeathed to the University of Aberdeen £1000, to be under the sole control and management of the Professors of Divinity, Church History and Biblical Criticism. The yearly interest of this sum to form two (formerly four) Bursaries, of equal amounts, and be given after competitive trial-to be assigned by said Professors to Students of Divinity attending the regular course of study of Divinity and Theology in said University, with the view of their becoming Ministers of the Church of Scotland. The Bursaries are tenable for three years, and the annual value of each is one half of the free income of the Foundation. 4. FRASER. Founded in 1730, by Dr. James Fraser of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea (see p. 256). The Bursary under this Foundation is now conjoined with the Bruce Bursaries to form the Bruce and Fraser Scholarship (q.v.). See also Fraser Bursary under Presentation Bursaries in this Faculty. 5. JOHNSTON. "The Founded in 1617, by John Johnston and regulated by Aberdeen (Endowed Institutions) Provisional Order, 1881”. One Bursary of the annual value of £15, tenable for three years. 6. KNOX. Founded in 1907, under the Will of the late Wm: Knox, Grain Importer, Aberdeen, who bequeathed £1,500 for Bursaries in the Faculty of Divinity. The present number of bursaries is two, of the value of about £24 each. 7. LORIMER. Founded in 1694 and 1703, by Rev. Wm. Lorimer, Alumnus, Mar. Coll., 1657, Minister in London, and regulated by "The Aberdeen (Endowed Institutions) Provisional Order, 1881 ". One Bursary of the annual value of £15, tenable for three years. 8. MACKAY. See this Foundation under the head of Competition Bursaries in Faculty of Arts. 9. ROLLAND. Founded in 1659, by Catherine Rolland, relict of Principal William Guild, and regulated by "The Aberdeen (Endowed Institutions) Provisional Order, 1881". One Bursary of the annual value of £15, tenable for three years. 10. SUTHERLAND. Founded in 1882 by the late John Sutherland, Esq., Viewton Place, Aberdeen, for a Student of Divinity, of the Church of Scotland, in the University of Aberdeen, during the period of his Divinity Course. The Bursary is of the annual value of £20 or thereby. By the Founder's direction the Principal and the Professors of the Faculty of Divinity are to administer the Bequest and to prescribe the conditions and regulations under which the Bursary is to be held. These conditions include the following: That the Bursary shall be adjudged by open competition, a preference being given, cæteris paribus, to Students of the name of Sutherland from the counties of Caithness, Sutherland and Aberdeen, and failing such, to Students of whatever name from the County of Caithness, and that the Bursar shall be subject to examination at the close of every Session on the subject of his study during that Session, and shall be liable to deprivation of part or of the whole of his Bursary according to the decision of the Examiners. 11. WATT. Founded in 1623 and 1625, by the Rev. James Watt of Snaith, Yorkshire. The Bursaries under this Foundation are now conjoined with the King William Bursaries to form the King William Scholarship (q.v.). (B) CONDITIONS OF BURSARIES UNDER PRIVATE PATRONAGE. 1. BURNET. Founded in 1711, by Gilbert Burnet, M.A., Mar. Coll., 1657, Bishop of Salisbury. By Ordinance of the Universities Commissioners the two Bursaries under this Foundation were combined into one of the value of £19 per annum, tenable for three years. Patron-Sir Thomas Burnett of Leys, Bart. 2. DRUM. Founded in 1629, by Sir Alexander Irvine of Drum, and regulated by Scheme of Administration, settled by the Court of Session, July 19, 1869.
