FROM THE FIRST SETTLEMENT OF THE COLONY OF VIRGINIA TO THE DISSOLUTION OF ITS CHARTER, AND THE COMMENCEMENT OF THe royal government, 1624. WE have noticed, in the Introduction to the first volume, the attempts that were made in the 16th century, by Ribault and Laudonnier, under the influence and patronage of Coligni and Chattillon, (commanders engaged in the cause of the Huguenots in France,) to commence settlements upon the coast of North America. We have also noticed the adventures of Ponce Leon, the Spaniard, and Milandes the Murderer, who put Ribault and his little colony to the most cruel death. We have also noticed the revenge taken by Gourges, from France, upon those barbarous Spaniards, who sacrificed Milandes and his company to the sword and the gibbet; razed their forts, and returned to France. We have also noticed the adventures of Sir Walter Raleigh, near the close of this century, under letters patent from Queen Elizabeth, who landed upon the island of Wockocken, upon this coast, and called it Virginia, in honour of the virgin queen, which became the general |
