Holy Jesu, when our power
Fails us in temptation's hour,
All unequal to the strife,
Thou to aid us art the Life.
Who would reach his heavenly home,
Who would to the Father come,
Who the Father's presence see,
Jesu, he must come by Thee.
Channel of the Father's grace!
Brightness of the Father's face!
Word of Life! Incarnate Son !
With the Father Thou art One!

OUR blest Redeemer, ere He breathed

His tender, last farewell,
A Guide, a Comforter, bequeathed

With us to dwell.

He comes sweet influence to impart,

A gracious, willing guest,
Where'er He finds an humble heart

Wherein to rest.
And
every

virtue we possess,
And every vict'ry won,
And every thought of holiness,

Are his alone.
Spirit of purity and grace!

Our weakness, pitying, see ;
O make our hearts thy dwelling-place,

And worthier Thee.

Hide me,

JESU, refuge of my soul,

Let me to thy bosom fly,
While the billows near me roll,
While the tempest still is high:

O my Saviour! hide,
Till the storm of life be past;
Safe into the haven guide;

O receive my soul at last.
Other refuge have I none,

Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, ah, leave me not alone,
Still support

and comfort me :
All my trust on Thee is stayed,

All my help from Thee I bring ;
Cover

my

defenceless head
With the shadow of thy wing.
Plenteous grace with Thee is found,

Grace to pardon all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound,
Make and keep me pure

within :
Thou of life the fountain art,

Freely let me take of Thee;
Spring Thou up within my heart,

Rise to all eternity. 154

OBJECT of my first desire,

Jesus! crucified for me;
All to happiness aspire,

I would seek it, Lord, in Thee :
Thee to praise, and Thee to know,
Is the joy of saints below;
Thee to see, and Thee to love,
Is the bliss of saints above.

P.M.

Lord, it is not life to live,

If thy presence Thou deny;
Lord, if Thou thy presence give,

'Tis no longer death to die:
Source and Giver of repose,
Only from thy love it flows;
Peace and happiness are thine,
Mine they are if Thou art mine.

7.6.

O LAMB of God! still keep me

Near to thy wounded side;
'Tis only there in safety
And

peace I can abide :
What foes and snares surround me,

What lusts and fears within ;
The
grace

that sought and found me
Alone can keep me clean.
'Tis only in Thee hiding

I feel my life secure ;
Only in Thee abiding

The conflict can endure:
Thine arm the victory gaineth

O'er every hateful foe;
Thy love my heart sustaineth

In all its cares and woe.
Soon shall mine eyes behold Thee

With rapture face to face ;
One half hath not been told me

Of all thy power and grace:
Thy beauty, Lord, and glory,

The wonders of thy love,
Shall be the endless story

Of all thy saints above.

ROCK of Ages ! cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee ;
Let the water and the blood,
From thy riven side which flow'd,
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
Not the labours of my hands
Can fulfil the Law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears for ever flow,
All for sin would not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to thy Cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace ;
Vile, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Saviour, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on thy judgment throne,-
Rock of Ages ! cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

WHEN, gracious Saviour, shall it be,
That I shall find my all in Thee ;
The fulness of thy promise prove,
The seal of thine eternal love ?

Thee, only Thee, I fain would find,
And cast the world and flesh behind ;
Thou, only Thou, to me be given,
'Tis all I ask in earth or heaven.
Lord, I am sick-my sickness cure;
I want-do Thou enrich the poor;
Under thy mighty hand I stoop,
O lift the prostrate sinner up.
Lord, I am blind—be Thou my sight;
Lord, I am weak-be Thou my might ;
A helper of the helpless be,
And let me find my all in Thee.

8.7.4.

COME, ye sinners, poor and wretched,

Come in this accepted hour;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love, and power :

He is able,
He is willing; doubt no more.
Let not conscience make you linger,

Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him:

This He gives you ;
'Tis the Spirit's rising beam.
Lo! th' Incarnate God ascended

Pleads the merit of his blood;
Venture on Him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude :

None but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good.
