GOOD FRIDAY. RIDE on! ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die! O Christ! More healing than Bethesda's pool, 2 The dying thief rejoiced to see And we would there, defiled as he, 3 Atoning Lamb, thy precious blood Till all the ransomed Church of God 4 O then in nobler, sweeter songs, We'll sing Thy power to save, 1 When these poor lisping, stammering tongues Lie silent in the grave. 20. GOOD FRIDAY. Go to dark Gethsemane, Ye that feel the tempter's power, Your Redeemer's conflict see; Watch with Him one bitter hour; Beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned; Love to man His soul sustained; Dying on the accursed tree : "It is finished !" hear Him cry ; Trust in Christ, and learn to die. 4 Early to the tomb repair, Where they laid the breathless clay; Who hath taken Him away? Christ is risen! He seeks the skies; 1 21. EASTER DAY. WHEN Christ, victorious from the grave, Ascended up on high, He gave to all his saints a pledge 2 Though for a time they sleep in dust, Soon the archangel's trump shall sound, 3 United to their risen Lord By true and living faith, They that are Christ's will persevere, 4 For them, unworthy as they are, Against that joyful day, 1 A crown of glory is reserved, 22. EASTER DAY. PRAISE to the Lord, who left the sky, Where thrones and powers his word obey; And laid his awful glory by, To dwell with us in mortal clay, 2 With us he bore the tempter's strife, 3 A friend and brother's name He gave To those He suffer'd to redeem ; He rose to glory from the grave, As we shall rise to reign with Him. 4 The Holy Spirit leads us on, Where He our great example trod ; And through his righteousness alone, We come with humble faith to God. 1 23. ASCENSION DAY. THOU art gone up on high, To mansions in the skies; And round Thy throne unceasingly The songs of praise arise. But we are lingering here, With sin and care oppressed; Lord, send Thy promised Comforter, 2 Thou art gone up on high; And girt with griefs and fears But only let that path of tears |
