The Faiths of Our Fathers. Alf Mapp Jr. Maryland: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, July 7th, 2005. 265 Pages.
Highly acclaimed historian Alf Mapp Jr. provides for us an interesting and uncomplicated read commentating on the religious affiliations of the men who founded our country.
The author expounds upon how the faiths of our Founding Father influenced the decisions that shaped the United States. Mapp touches upon the religious beliefs of men like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and James Madison.
The author initially acknowledges the preconceptions of the public; the Founding Fathers were not all bible thumping Christians, nor were they overwhelmingly Deist. I appreciated that Mapp embraced the fact that the Founding Fathers were not unanimous in their beliefs. They differed greatly in their faith yet paved a way for all Americans, present and future, to worship however they please according to their religious convictions.
Unfortunately, though this book is easy to read, it is very brief when illustrating the religious influences of our Founding Fathers. I would recommend it for friends who appreciate an enjoyable yet quick read about historical figures. However, I would never consider this book for any type of scholarly research. Some aspects of Mapp's arguments often seem a little weak.
