NOTICE OF CHARLES DOLCI, ALIAS CARLO DOLCI. Charles Dolci was born at Florence in 1616. He is usually designed by the name of Carlo Dolci. He was a pupil of James Vignali, and caused himself to be noticed at the florentine school, in the same manner as Sasso-Ferrato at the roman academy, since they both habitually treated the subjects of the Virgins almost always in half-bodies, and whose heads are admired on account of their expression full of sweetness and pity. Carlo Dolci also distinguished himself for the sweetest and most harmonious colouring. His heads are touched in a pleasing melting way. Such valuable qualities acquired this master a high fame for the painting of portrait, which caused him to be demanded at the court of the emperor, where he performed the portraits of the imperial family, so successfully, that the monarch heaped upon him the kindest benefits and honours. Carlo Dolci's pictures and portraits are scarce to be met with, they are honourably ranked in the choicest cabinets. This painter died at Florence in 1686, 70 years old.
